^ I'm just missing what the point is.
Greenville's districts are self sustaining as well.
Go to West End have dinner, drinks, baseball, theater, galleries, clubs, etc....spend an evening and never cross the river into City Center.
Go to City Center have dinner, drinks, theater, galleries, arena football, clubs, etc and never cross the river to West End.
Greenville's districts (West End, City Center and North End) are all self sustaining, but if you choose, you have the option to walk thanks to excellent connectivity. The best of both worlds.

My family has been in SC for many generations and I have never noticed this. Hmm.
People are like this everywhere, not just in SC.

Technically one could walk through USC to get to the Vista from Five Points (and it's doable), but it's not necessarily going to be the most interesting walk since you'll be passing by a lot of institutional buildings and walking through residential areas. Again, we're talking about two different cities with two totally different layouts.

You must not drive down Assembly Street in downtown Columbia then, because there are always many homeless people hanging out at the bus stop, at the library, in front of some of the government buildings, etc. It is very noticeable along that stretch of Assembly.
I think the reason homelessness seems more "in your face" in Columbia is because it is concentrated around major streets in the downtown core. Charleston and Greenville certainly have homeless people too, but they don't tend to be located in the middle of downtown.

Oliver Gospel Mission--right smack in the middle of downtown.

I've lived in Columbia 25 years and I've never had a homeless person do anything to me but ask for change, to which I simply said, "Don't have it; sorry." They are people. They don't bother me and I don't bother them. The last time I visited Greenville there was a smelly, dirty homeless man hanging out around some benches on Main Street. So what?

Which is a very rare occurrence, unlike Columbia.

Yeah, instead Charleston's homeless people are right as you get off of I-26/US-17/Ravenel Bridge exit for Meeting St. under the bridges and in the first few streets as you head towards the historic downtown and million dollar homes - what irony there. What a great way to welcome the millions of tourists that frequent the area each year! Guess most people don't mind though - including us - b/c it continues to be a popular place to visit.
