Default Hilton Head Island -- Walking friendly?

How walker-friendly HHI is?
No, I do not mean as walking-friendly as San Francisco nor am I expecting to see thousands of people parading the streets as in NYC. I'm basically just wondering if it is allowed? (That sounds ridiculous, but I'm serious. I've been to several places where you will be ticketed if you walk.)

The beaches that require a fee for parking for example -- what if I didn't mind walking two miles to and from my hotel to get there? Would they be angry? Would I run into trouble on the streets? (I've also been several places where people throw milkshakes, full soda cans, newspapers, etc. at you if you walk down the side of the street.)

This will be my first time visiting obviously. I'd love to explore it on foot.

The island has paths nearly everywhere you want to go. There are no issues with walking places, even to fee-based parking at beaches.

Just use common sense. Do not walk in areas you may feel uncomfortable in (very few and far between, in reality) or very late at night or early in the morning.

Well... What I remember of going there is that it is *super* biker friendly and there are bike paths EVERYWHERE. So I'd imagine you could walk along those...

There's a ton of biking and walking trails that go through almost the whole island and there are people on them no matter what of day it is. When we lived there, we thought the biking/walking trails through the Shipyard Plantation were the best. You may want to try there first, or get a map from the visitors center (located when you first enter the island).
