Default Can move anywhere!

My husband works for the Federal Prison System. I am wanting to move south east. I would love to live in Florida but I think it is too expensive for us. I'm now looking into SC. The prisons are in Salters, Estill, Edgefield or Bennettsville. Can anyone give me an insights to these areas. We are looking for a family community with exceptional schools.

I don't think you will find exceptional public schools in any of those four places. All four are in rural areas that have historically been very poor, since before the Civil War. You'll probably like those towns if you like to hunt and fish, or if you just want to live out in the country on a few acres.

I don't know what kind of environment you are interested in or how far your husband is willing to travel for work but Salters is about a half hour from Manning and 45 minutes from Georgetown. Both decent areas... not sure about the schools specifically though.

Those are four very rural areas, but I suppose if I had to chose, I might go with Edgefield. It has a quaint downtown and is included in the Augusta-Aiken metropolitan area.

Well, thanks for the info. None of these sound appealling. We are not into hunting and fishing. I was going for more like a downscale place of the Desperate Housewives. Good neighborhoods, fitness is very important to us so a good gym, shopping must include at least a Target and still schools is the number one importance. Maybe South Carolina is only a place to visit for us. We would love to move to Florida but it is just too expensive. We just want out of the snow and cold, if we never see a winter snow again that would be great!

Default Don't give up too fast

I agree that Edgefield is worth a look. (I'm not saying anything good or bad about the other places). I like the quaint downtown and older homes, but by moving only a short distance away you could live in a neighborhood like you describe. Mount Vintage is only a few miles away from the prison and it's downright swanky! (Be sure to read sentence that with a Southern twang). Check the forum Mount Vintage Plantation, Trenton, Edgefield and Johnston. You may find exactly what you're looking for.

I am biased but I think you should check out Aiken. The drive to the prison out towards Edgefield also would not be bad. There would be very little traffic. Schools in Aiken are fairly good--Area 1 schools seem to have the best test scores. We have kids currently in Chukker Creek and South Aiken and both have had great experiences. Check out the web site Great Schools.net. Tons of great information about ALL Aiken County schools. You can definitely find the 'desperate house wife' thing here--and not in a bad way. Our homes range from typical southern style historical homes to some very affordable housing just outside the downtown area. From most neighborhoods you can be in the downtown area in 10 minutes. We do have one of the coolest downtowns for a small town. Amazing (downtown) restaurants, a big gym with all the perks, golf, horses, only 2+ hours to the beach or mountains. Taxes are on the lower side. Aiken is pretty much the poster child of what you would imagine a small southern town to be like. Good luck with your home/city search!

I agree - Aiken is a wonderful town. Currently I live in Virginia but still have a home in Aiken. The schools and shopping are both very good - especially the south side. Sadly, I will have to sell the house because I doubt we will ever get back there. I think you would enjoy the beautiful Aiken area.

Hi,

My dh works for the BOP, and we moved a year ago, from GA to AZ, love it, but are now considering moving again, back to the SE, to Salters, SC....or one of the other locations you named, but right now, Salters is our pick.
Did you decide to move, please update.

Blessings....

Edgefield isn't far from Aiken, N. Augusta, Augusta. Nice golf course there - as someone mentioned, quaint town. It would be my choice.
