Angry Separate meter for irrigation?

Does anyone have a second meter for their irrigation system? I am in disbelief of how much it costs to get a second meter installed.

We live in York and have a large yard that needs sprinkler systems. Last summer when we moved in, the lawn needed water in the summer and our water bill was $200+ for several months. We later found out that all that water for the yard was charged for sewer treatment.

Aside from saving time on doing the watering ourselves, I am unsure if getting a separate meter would benefit us at all. York Water & Sewer can't give advice but said it's $550 for tap fee + $30 for activation!

Comment are appreciated.

In our previous home we installed a separate meter for the irrigation system due to large water bills.

It was TOTALLY worth the expense of adding the second meter. Our lawn and plants would have suffered through the drought years for lack of water without that meter; the waste water treatment fees were HUGE!

In my opinion it is worth the expense.

Well, you had bills of several hundred dollars for a few months. How long would it have taken to recoup the money spent on tap fee? not long. Doesn't that make it worth it?

I'm in Greenville, and with the Blue Ridge Water District. They actually require the second meter. You can't hook irrigation to your domestic meter. Installation cost is roughly the same as NY.
