Hilton Head: Are there slums around it?
I read a post on this board referring to slums around Hilton Head. Is this true? Does anyone know the slum area or the zip codes to avoid there? I'm doing lots of homework now on the area. Thanks.

I'd look up "Gentrification" to understand what's been done to the traditional residents of the island.

When we lived out on Hilton Head Island we loved it. The actual island itself didn't have any slums. However, over the bridge (going off the island) there were some areas in Beaufort and Bluffton that I thought were a little rough.

Keep in mind that what is considered the slums of Hilton Head is not necessarily the slums in other areas. Still, the very least desirable and most troublesome areas are off:
-Spanish Wells
-Dillon Road
-Mathews Drive
-Cordillo
-Squire Pope
-Gum Tree
-A small area off Beach City Road
-Marshland Road (though not all of Marshland is "bad")

I agree with most of those, except Spanish Wells. The Spanish Wells subdivision is filled with beautiful homes, lots of trees, lakes, etc. Also, part of Spanish Wells is set to become gated soon.

But most of Spanish Wells Road sucks. Frankly, I am amazed anyone would pay premium money to live in the Spanish Wells neighborhood given the crap you have to drive through to get to it.

In a nutshell, one side of Spanish Wells Road has million-dollar homes, while the other side has trailers and shacks housing the people who clean and landscape those million-dollar homes. If the millionaires who flew down from their New York mansions or sailed up from their island retreats would only learn to clean and garden, there would be no need for the "slums" on the other side of Spanish Wells.
