Hanrahan: anyone know this area?
Is anyone familiar with Hanrahan? Can you tell me anything about it insofar as living there?
I am guessing it is about 15 miles from MUSC? Well, close enough to go to if you have a heart attack, anyway.

Hanahan? I know it. Basically is ghetto to the south, west & north, and heavy industry to the east. Right in the middle are a slew of poorly built "national builder" style homes. Oh, they have a Super Bi-Lo. That's it. Oh, and HEAVY handed police!

Don't move to Hanahan. There might be a few decent subdivisions there, but for the most part it's a bad city contained within a bad area of the Charleston metro.
I don't have any personal experience with Hanahan. Why? Because when I moved to Charleston, I was told that it was a bad area. So I stay away.

If you want somewhat affordable & close to MUSC, look towards West Ashley.
Basically anything that hugs the northern arc of 526 (Chas Neck, N. Chas, Hanahan, S. Goose Creek) are to be avoided.

I haven't ever been down there, but, from looking at Sperling's bestplaces and the demographics, the area surely doesn't appear ghetto. But, again, I have never been there.
What I was looking for is people's opinions on the area, which, it appears, is pretty negative.
Luvsdabeach, can you tell me from personal experience what the area is like and who lives there?

Hanahan is about 10 from downtown Charleston. You will find generations of people that grew up there. My father still lives in the home I grew up in and I have a sister that still lives there and her children go to Hanahan schools. You will find mostly older brick homes there but there is a part of Hanahan, it's Tanner Plantation. The area around the middle school has become a questionable area but there are many parts that are nice to raise a family in. Recommended areas are Otranto, Dominion Hills, Berkeley Hills, Highland Park, Tanner Plantation, and the area around the high school. There is no city center but it's located close to everything.
If you go to Google, you can pull up Hanahan and will be able to see pics of the area with street level.

But again, you're surrounded by N. Chas & S. Goose Creek Ghetto/Barrios. East, you have all the Cooper River industries, including lovely wafts from the paper mill. Every part of Hanahan has fallen victim to the bad neighbors surrounding it, including to a point, the poorly built tract homes in Tanner Plantation.

Not all of N Chas is ghetto either. Every area in Charleston and every city in the country has a not so good area. Depending on the direction of the wind many areas can smell the paper mill. The neighorhoods I posted for the OP are good neighborhoods and I posted the area to stay away from. Hanahan is a great small town to raise a family. When I attend sporting events there I see people I went to school with that have moved back to raise their families. My mother also went to Hanahan. What part of Tanner Plantation are you talking about?

Tanner Plantation has some very expensive homes as well as 200K ish homes. Most (if not all)of Tanner Plantation is in Berkeley county. Ryland, KB are a few of the builders. The HOA is strict and that keeps the neighborhood nice. If you are looking for less expensive areas try the neighborhoods that border the Dorchester county line in North charleston also. They are in the Dor 2 school zone but North charleston address. Try Taylor plantation, Whitehall, Cedar Grove.
