I hear Aiken is a draw for horse people. Do they overwhelm the "regular" folks? Do you fit in if you don't have a horse and are not at all interested in horses? I know lots of retirees are going there and we are looking to retire in a friendly town, not some snobby place.

I lived briefly in Aiken when I first moved to SC from NYC......had a 4 acre property where I enjoyed the peace and tranquility. Lovely town, definitely an emphasis on horses......especially out in the county there are people living on huge acreage with a lot of horses running around. I love horses but did not own any when I lived there and I did not have any problems fitting in.....you should be fine even if you are not into horses.
Aiken is on the smaller side but has stores like Wal-Mart, a small mall and other stores along Whiskey Road, also a decent dowtown area that includes a country club. It is also a short drive from Augusta, GA which has some restaurants an airport and other things in the downtown area..........so any store that Aiken does not have you can always drive over to Augusta.
Good luck.

I live in Aiken, I don't have horses, I don't even ride. Same for golf, a sport I really don't enjoy. And I'm far from retired!
But this doesn't matter at all! Life here is peaceful and there's still plenty to do. And it's not snobby, you have people from all walks of live who live here...

Both
I've lived in Columbia for several years now. There's good and bad to it but that's not your question.
I lived in Summerville as well for several years and moved from there to Columbia in 1998. When I left, Summerville was transitioning from a sleepy little town to a suburb of Charleston. Growth was the word of the day and there was construction everywhere. Summerville now isn't like it was years ago. It's a smaller town with a bigger town feel.
If you like Summerville, consider West Ashley. Closer to Charleston and mostly developed, it's a nice place to be... or go over the bridges to Isle of Palms or Mt. Pleasant. They're both nice as well... Isle of Palms is a lot more expensive than Mt. Pleasant though.

I've been to Aiken and Columbia. I choose Aiken. It's smaller and friendlier with all the stores and restaurants you need. You can drive to the beaches near Charleston and Columbia has no beaches. Good Luck!

Aiken has no beaches either and Columbia is closer to the beaches than Aiken.

I moved to SC last Dec. and Summerville and Aiken were on my list of possible locations. I loved Aiken. As far as the horse thing, that was one of the things that charmed me. I made a wrong turn in the downtown area, and found a guy leading a horse down a side street, and no, I don't ride myself. I think the housing is reasonable, it's an attractive town and the the downtown is lovely.
Summerville was just OK IMO. But really, you need to visit to know what you really like. Our opinions only get you so far. In the end, I choose Greenville. It went on and then off my list, then I saw the following link, came to visit and loved it. I still love it after almost a year. http://www.city-data.com/forum/green...enjoyment.html
