I love the idea of having four seasons as well-I really feel that is something I would miss....not going to happen in the Lowcountry...well, it's good to know all the facts so we can make an informed decision!

You should take a look at Western NC area. I have a second home just outside of Waynesville NC. About the only bug we worry about up there is the occasional mosquito. Here on HHI, the palmetto bug deal is just a way of life, it's impossible to "palmetto bug proof" our house without batheing in chemicals.
There are four seasons. Lots of transplants, so you don't get a lot of the "carpetbagger" attitude from those who think the civil war has not yet ended. Property values are somewhat high, but I could argue that is a good thing. Asheville is 45 minutes away for arts, etc. Waynesville is a quaint litle town with shopping, restaurants. And of course, you are in the beauty of the Smoky Mountains.
There are several towns like Waynesville in the Western NC, Northern GA, Eastern TN area. I would seriously give it a look see.

This is the region where we are relocating to,it is so much nicer than down here.
We DO have chiggers up there...quite an eye opener being attacked by them.
Of course there are no fire ants up there so that more than makes up for it.

Anywhere in the Southeast that isn't way up in the mountains is "buggy."

HHIlander67, we both love the idea of being near the mountains! I've heard of Waynesville and Ashville of course..it's something to check out.
Can you suggest any other towns in Western NC Northern Georgia that would be not to rual/small and near the mountains? (thanks!)
I know I'll never have a "bug-free" enviernment, but this Palmetto bug and fire ant thing just scares the wits out of me. And I've read they have attitude too!

Oh and boy do they HURT!!! My daughter is very allergic to bug bites and they all seem to flock to her. The ant bites are horrendously aweful. They will bite anything, dogs, cats, people...they aren't picky. Our mastiff's legs are all chewed up cause he was playing with a pit bull buddy the other night.
I really wish we would have chosen western NC instead of the coast of SC lol

Agreed, t's beautiful country. If I didn't love to fish so much, I would be there all year. And we do get chiggers during this time of the year but they don't seem to be that bad. They seem to bother the dogs more than us. I would mention the rattlesnakes but I don't want to freak anyone out.

Glad to help. There really aren't many that are "large". We went through the same process about 7 years ago, we researched the whole area and spent 4 months traveling there on the weekends. We narrowed it down to Boone, Cashiers/Highlands, Hendersonville area, Brevard area, Dahlonega and Waynesville. I think I am leaving out a couple of places. We didn't want to live in Asheville as we wanted acreage, elevation and a view or stream.
We ended up in Waynesville mainly because we found a beautiful piece of property that had everything we wanted at the elevation we wanted. Elevation was key for us.
