I agree. Clinton is a nice small town and Laurens is a beautiful county. As with many other small towns in the state it has had its own share of struggles and the current economy has put a damper on things currently. I hope more in-sourcing takes place where people stop buying foreign made goods and a pillow can be made in Clinton or Laurens, SC instead of in China. I did a paper in undergrad on the cotton industry in Uzbekistan - one of the major foreign exporters in cotton and they are running out of water fast - so hopefully more of it will be grown again in the Southeast and the price will rise again for Southern cotton.
What is so bad about small town pride or telling people how great it is to live, work, play in a small town. In fact we need a grassroots movement to get people back to the small towns where the lifestyle and values lived strong and still do if you know where to look for it. Why is that Forbes always lists the best places to live as cities or suburbs in very high cost areas when there are much less hectic places to live? Southern small towns should not just be retirement destinations - no, they should also be a place where high school and college grads look forward to staying and making a difference, places where employers and people can move to work and live, places where people buy local and support local teams. As much as I enjoy college football - I would much rather go to a local high school football game and see people that I know, not have to wait 4 hours in traffic, and be able to see the action from much closer up. The atmosphere cannot be beat.
If a relaxing drive through the countryside in Laurens County is not enough as the OP said there's Sumter National Forest (Enoree District) nearby, Lake Greenwood, and the mountains within an hour and a half. People need to rediscover small town southern living and Clinton is a good place to start. We need more people like the original poster.
