May the 10th was not taken from the song. We celebrate Confederate Memorial Day on May 10th, because that's the day the Confederacy fell. In the song it's mentioned as Richmond, which was the capital of the Confederacy, so usually when the capital falls, then the country falls with it.

Well, Richmond fell in April. The Confederate Government was dissolved May the 5th.

I suppose they are using May 10th, the capture of Jefferson Davis, as the date.
