"Memorial" in this case should not be associated with a fun party. It should be somber, in my opinion, since the Civil War was an extremely tragic part of this nation's history - not because the North won, but because the war should never have happened.

Default Whhhoooooo hoooooo

I went to go to the dmv yesterday and it was closed with a sign on the door saying federal holiday. ah, hello. not a federal holiday or it would be celebrated by the whole country like all other federal holidays. so the only ones that celebrate it here are the dmv and the bank because we got mail and the court house was open. memorial day is to celebrate the death of all our fallen soldiers not just the confederate army ones. that's just wrong. i even talked to my native neighbors and they said it was stupid so i guess it's not just me. i guess the OP was right get your beer and your pickup and let's go mudding..

Agreed, as the Federal Gov't chose to move away from the original tenents on which this nation was founded. The result of which is seen to this day....

Well, not just them. I had the day off, too, so I certainly appreciate that!

Come on, we as SC natives should have a better attitude about these things instead of saying "the south will rise again". It's bad to be stereotyped but even worse we some live up to those expectations.

I honor those that have died in wars, even the civil war.

You know what is interesting to me? May the 10th is mentioned in "The Night they drove old dixie down." I was reading an article about it not too long ago, which discussed the historical significance of May the 10th. Apparently nothing worthy of mention happened on that day, so it makes me wonder if the song influenced the holiday in some way.

YouTube - The Band- The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember oh so well

The night they drove Old Dixie down and the bells were ringing
The night they drove Old Dixie down and the people were singin', they went
Na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na-na

....

edit: I went to Wikipedia, which mentions the following events happened May 10th:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_10
1863Confederate General Stonewall Jackson dies eight days after he is accidentally shot by his own troops during the American Civil War.
1864American Civil War: Colonel Emory Upton leads a 10-regiment "Attack-in-depth" assault against the Confederate works at The Battle of Spotsylvania, which, though ultimately unsuccessful, would provide the idea for the massive assault against the Bloody Angle on May 12. Upton was wounded slightly but immediately is promoted to Brigadier general.
1865 – American Civil War: Jefferson Davis is captured by Union troops near Irwinville, Georgia.
1865 – American Civil War: In Kentucky, Union soldiers ambush and mortally wound Confederate raider William Quantrill, who lingers until his death on June 6.

I know where the graves are of two of my great, great grandfathers and one of my great, great, great grandfathers who were Confederate soldiers. None of them died in the war. My great, great, great and great, great, great, great Union soldier grandfathers, the graves of whom I also know the location and none of whom died in the war, must have spared them. Glory, glory, hallelujah!
