i assume that people in northern climates think work is all there is in life, based on the original poster. I think that is pretty pathetic but probably true

I think that please, thank you, and being called sir and ma'am are more a matter of ingrained politeness, which is totally different from a person being genuinely nice. We moved here from the Midwest last year and I find this aspect of the South one of the more enjoyable. However, I have found that most of this friendliness is surface(and there is nothing wrong with that), but it will take time to develop true friends.

Hospitality
When it comes to "fitting in", I really don't mind being told to "slow down", and enjoy yourself.. Some of the cracks about the Northern (Wisconsin) accent, my high speed rambling, and my general high blood pressure from living in the North, are all taken in jest, and then I realize a little later that not only was it funny, but I started taking it serious,, YES,, and realizing living up here is killing me, literally AND physically. People are in such a hurry, to push past and ignore your gaze so as not to have to say anything to you.....Southern hospitality is REAL, NOT fake, and when somebody asks "how ya doin", they really mean it.. My trip to the Columbia,SC area last year was an eye opener, and now even I am looking to re-locate.. Hope they'll have a hyper Yankee in their midst, and never hesitate to tell me to "slow down, son,, we don't understand a thing your saying". LOL.

i am genuinely nice to people and so are all my family down south. It is ingrained to have manners and respect for others, esp elders. it isnt forced to say yes ma'am no sir, thank you and please. these are common courtesies.
I love when i go home to slow down, sit on the front porch, talking with friends and family, going crabbing and fishing, sunday suppers after church and still havign a full on career to go to and raising kids

I wish you luck if you relocate, keep in mind visiting/vacationing are not the same as when you actually move. It is an adjustment, you'll find yourself missing things from back home trust me. Take everything with a grain of salt. At least up North if people are rude, they do it to your face so you know how they really feel haha.

It's MYTH
In my opinion, this southern hospitality thing is a MYTH! One thing I do find true about southerns- they are nosey. I think they say northerners are rude because we are private people. I don't like being asked- "who ya family is", do I go to church, why don't you go, am I married, do I have kids. It's none of their business. But I have found many, many rude southerners.

There are rude Southerners, just as there are nice Northerners. People really overplay stereotypes, and thus set themselves up for disappointment. People should really stop expecting a utpoia when they get down here. We're all human.
And what one calls "nosey" the other calls just starting a general conversation--it really is a Southern thing. We aren't meaning to pry.

Being a nosey Northerner, I truly enjoy the questions and conversations of the South--I love to talk!!! (or "tawk" as I say it)
We've been treated rudely and we've been treated kindly---but mostly we've experienced a cordial attitude. In 18 years of vacationing in a NC small town, I will say, I have never heard the "F" word spoken in public--and that's a refreshing change from where I am. Why aren't we down there now? Kids and grandkids are HERE :>P
