As to the flag flying on the Statehouse grounds...it is flying at the war memorial to the Confederate dead,a very apt place for such a flag one would think.
Of course I imagine a lot of people would like that memorial removed from it's prominent location as well....
The flag most used by the KKK in its heyday was a little different to the flag being discussed....
To add,the KKK at its most powerful was a northern ogranisation....weirdly enough that is 'forgotten' by most northerners.

Thanks Greenville and Oz for the information about the voting. I guess SC should have an official vote on this issue.
Oz, I saw the pics that you posted. However, I do not see how those pics negate the fact that the Confederate Flag is a symbol of hate and racism. It still will be, regardless of what pics you post.

If it WAS put to the popular vote and WAS voted on to stay right where it is(above the memorial to those who died fighting under it) would people still be complaining and wanting it removed....somehow I think so.
And unless you consider the US flag a symbol of hate and racism as much as the Confederate flag you are being a little.....hypocritical perhaps?

As long as Glenn McConnell is alive, expect SC to remain right where it is on a number of issues--including this one.

This question is too hypothetical. Maybe we should just push to get it voted on first. That would seem to be a good first step.

I'm not being hypocritical at all. In my personal experience in the U.S., no one has used the U.S. Flag as a symbol of hate and racism. In that same vein, I have personally seen the Confederate Flag used as that symbol. In fact, its symbolism of hate and racism is pervasive all across the U.S. That's why I do not see SC as being any exception to that rule.

I think it's sad that slavery, segregation, and unjust treatment of minorities ever existed in this country. I understand that, to some, the Confederate Flag symbolizes those things. Having said that, I also understand that the Civil War was not just about slavery. Although it's easy to characterize the North as the good guys and the South as the evil racists, the reality is much more complex. As others have pointed out, slavery and racial hatred are part of the history of the entire country (the entire world), not just South Carolina.
I don't think we should allow others to rewrite history for us and force South Carolinians to accept the stereotyped version of our past. The fact that some people are offended is not a good reason to take down the memorial from the state house grounds.

Photographic evidence is not enough to prove the US flag was indeed used by and is still used by the KKK???

I've lived here in SC most of all of my life.....However, I don't see much in the way of racisim against black people by white peole however I do see a lot of racisim concerning Hispanics and I do see what they call Reverse Racism a lot of times (Blacks racist against whites) Heck I have seen Black ppl racist against other black people because they are too light skinned or too dark skinned. Its just the way it is. I try not to let it get to me as I have been picked on in my high school days simply for being white a few times.
HOwever, all that aside I LOVE THIS STATE! you just can't let it get to you. Gotta be Thick-Skinned..no matter what color you are or what you look like your bound to run into someone who hates you for being the way you are. You just love on them and show them you are bigger than that and eventually maybe just maybe they will have a change of heart! PRAY FOR THEM!!

Blacks around here do NOT like Hispanics...not sure why.We see a lot of black crime on Hispanics.
I have been called 'honky' by little children here, quite funny really.
As to the lighter skinned black people/darker skinned,I have heard of it but never seen it much.

That's pretty much universally true. Go to Los Angeles sometime - the tension and hatred are far worse there.
What's funny to me is how people from other parts of the country envision all of this racial tension in the South. I guess it goes back to the Civil War, some struggles with the civil rights movement in parts of the South, etc. But it's just funny to me when someone thinks we're living in the 1950s or something - and it's especially funny when someone from an almost exclusively white state says it (i.e., very little diversity). We are used to having different races of people, and for all but a handful of examples, we get along fine. In the mid-size to larger Southern metros (you know, the ones most people think don't exist, since we're supposed to be 100% rural) we have even more racial diversity and cultural harmony. I guess it goes to show you how significant perception and stereotypes can be.
