The media loves to air negative stories on the state. We're all just a bunch of hillbillies, right?

These individuals really only speak for themselves. Now what you DO need to know is that SC is a solid red state with a few blue pockets, so know that's the type of political environment you'll be entering. But as far as these statements, even worse ones came out of California during the campaigns.

While these comments are certainly not reflective of all South Carolinians, they occur far more often than they should. Unfortunately, President Obama's election has brought out the worst of the worst among both our citizens and our elected officials. Politically, SC is as red as it gets. From a civil rights perspective, SC is still fighting to remain in the 70's. The fact that the confederate flag still flies on the Capitol grounds should be all the indication you need. I bring that up reluctantly, since this flag was recently the subject of a thread in this forum that dragged on far longer than it should have. Publicly, we talk a good game on racial equality. The off-hand slurs and behind-closed-doors dealings tell a different story. IMO, the more metropolitan areas such as Columbia and Greenville have made more progress, but we all have a long way to go. SC has much to offer, but if you're looking for a progressive state, SC ain't it.

If you're sensitive and thin-skinned about racism, then you probably won't like South Carolina.
This is not to say that these perspectives are common among most people.. but if you get all worked up over some random fool's comments, you're probably going to be in a perpetual state of outrage.

If you can't see the racist slant in that comment, then you're being a bit disingenuous--never mind the fact that humans did not descend from gorillas according to evolutionary theory. We're evolutionary cousins as both species are descended from a common ancestor. And I seriously, seriously doubt that Rusty DePass of all people was trying to give a crash course in evolutionary theory.

I must've gotten my chimps, monkeys, and gorillas mixed up.
If I look at his comments from the perspective that he's not referring to Michelle Obama specificially being descended from gorillas, but rather the black race at large, then yes the racism is obvious.
And that may very well be what he meant. It wouldn't surprise me, but I don't know. It is in extremely poor taste one way or the other.

I don't know where you are coming from, but you are kidding yourself if you don't think that sort of racism exists there. I moved to SC from MI where I was born and raised, I've also lived in SE TX and it seemed to me that at least minorities there knew where they stood with racists, because they were open about it, whereas in other parts of the country, people are quietly racist.
I'm not saying either way is right, but I do get tired of people thinking that these same types of things are not going on where they come from. That's just fooling yourself.
