I visit Columbia often since its only a 45 min to 1hr drive from Augusta. I do remember seeing a Williams-Sonoma in Columbiana.
But they are missing stores Augusta has. Aldo, Apple, Aerie, Ann Taylor, Sephora, Jared Galleria of Jewlery, & Pf Changs.

Be that as it may, those don't make or break Columbia. Some folks rarely go to malls anymore. They have things that I'm sure they wouldn't trade for those stores like an big arena, Amtrak service, a much better airport, a nice zoo, the list goes on. Columbia is still a bit ahead of Augusta.

What caused Columbia Place go down? I remember that being a nice mall about 10 years ago. Do you think Columbiana Center will follow the same path as Columbia Place?

You are talking about Haywood Mall in Greenville being bad? That is funny I used to live in Florida and both the malls I went to down theere were no where as nice or clean as Haywood Any mall you go to on the weekend is going to be crowded.

Used to go to Columbia Mall growing up. Over the years, it had its share of a few high profile incidents at the mall and in the theater. It also was rumored as being an initiation site for local gangs though Law Enforcment never confirmed it. Its plight goes waaaaaay back into the 80s and 90s. I remember there was a "rule" on the books out there.. "No Break Dancing in the Mall"... Seriously, people would go out there and use the floors for impromtu "dance wars". I think things got out of hand a couple of times and of course customers headed for the hills. A few shootings, fights, local NBA star Jermaine O'neil and his entourage getting a high profile escorting out of the mall for one reason or another, an angry outspoken sheriff being quoted as saying keep the "n word" out the mall and comments/efforts to cut the city buses routes short of the facility because they were allegedly shuttling "thugs" out there and ....viola... "bad mall stigma".
But even more so than these events.. I think that it may have run its course.. once Columbia's premier mall.. it has been overtaken by income, demographics and lifestyle choices. Columbiana Center was the lid, but the Village of Sandhills provided the nails. I think it may "evolve" into another type of shopping, entertainment, or commercial venue but I am not sure if it will return to its original status as a premier mall in the Metro
I do not think that Columbiana will follow the same path at least not in the foreseable future.. Malls may not be as popular as the once were but they are not building as many of them now as they used to.. So as long as they can stay in a niche and no one builds some 'lifestyle center' on Lake Murray.. with waterfront dining, condos, and water taxis.. they should be ok for awhile

Give Columbiana Center at another 2 or three years and it will decline. The Village at Sandhills will pull some. Columbiana Center is just one lifestyle center away from a decline as far as mid to upscale stores are concerned. If GGP is smart then thay would add a prominade lifestyle center to it like they did in Augusta. That would keep Columbiana as a major mall for the next 5 to 10 years atleast. Since 2007 even Augusta has landed stores that are not in the Columbia Market like Apple, Jared, P.F. Changs and Chop House. If Columbia does not want to fall behind Augusta and Greenville then they need to do something quick with the mall.

Wow did not know Augusta had all of those retailers.. I can can agree with your assessment. As the pull of the suburbs continues out towards Chapin and Newberry...there may be more pressure to build a 'lifestyle center' if one does not go up at Columbiana..All of the raw land around some of those exits further up could prove tempting when the economy turns around

It should be noted that General Growth Properties, the owner of both Augusta Mall and Columbiana Centre, is facing major financial trouble and even recently filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. According to a reporter at WJBF, one of the factors which contributed to the company's $27 Billion of debt was the recent renovations at Augusta Mall. ( More info)
Greenville's super-regional Haywood Mall is owned by Simon Property Group, the nation's #1 shopping mall owner and one of the nation's largest publicly-traded real estate companies. Despite the nice renovations at Haywood Mall and the struggling global economy, Simon appears to be holding up quite well so far.
