aaahhh the 70's......were did they go ? i was thinking about buying a piece of land and putting one in with maybe 3 or 4 screens playing 2 movies each per night. i thought a nice drive-in playing some good movies might go over big down here since the weather is pretty nice at night . just have to put up some big o bug lights that's for sure.

There was definitely one in Rockingham. Granted it may have closed. It was very narrow with a aisle down the middle and maybe 2 rows on each side. We joked about it being as small as a school bus. Now that was almost a decade ago, so maybe its gone.

A classic drive-in movie theater was recently re-opened in Greenwood.

I agree that there aren't as many theaters as you would expect these days. I think a lot of that has to do with the increased availability of pay-per-view movies at home, DVR, etc. Also, there are simply more entertainment options now than there used to be. People have a wider variety of interests, and access to a lot more.

100 screens is correct and it isn't a stretch at all:
Nickelodeon - 1 screen
Wynnsong - 10 screens
Regal Richland Mall - 7 screens
Dutch Square AMC - 14 screens
Carmike - 14 screens
Columbiana Grande - 14 screens
St Andrews Multi - 5 screens
Columbia Place - 8 screens
Village at Sandhill - 16 screens
Pasttime Pavilion - 8 screens
OK, I was a little off...97 screens.

There are a few. I know there is a drive-in theater in Monetta, about 35 miles west of Columbia.

I was reading an article about a drive in in Ohio that is fighting a sports park next door about the parks lights washing out the movie screen. Anyway, they had this picture below, thought I share it with the drive-in movie lovers:

ok that's good there are theaters in sc just not in our area. so maybe i could bring back the drive in back. we are used to going to a movie atleast a couple times a month. watching pay per view on my 42" flat screen is not the same as a nice theater.

You originally said that Columbia has 100 theaters, and I was sure you meant to say 100 screens instead. That's why I posted what I did.
Based on your post, Columbia has 10 theaters. It seems that Columbia residents have a wide variety of choices when it comes to movie theaters.

Yeah, different semantics; I was referring to each screen as a theater. I think most people knew what I meant.

I agree. Some folks are lucky enough to have a customized home theater set up that would rival some theaters.
But for the rest of us, I love seeing a "blockbuster" type movie (lot's of action and sound like Star Trek) in a good theater.
