Really only 2 other options in SC, Hilton Head & Myrtle Beach. Must say though, that you are going to really struggle to find a 'growing economy' anywhere in the Carolinas right now (and for that matter, most of the US)outside of maybe the Research Triangle area of Raleigh-Durham, and that's a good 2-3 hours from the coast.

Charleston is not rated well on crime (this in large part is due to North Charleston), it's rated like 7th worst nationally. There are some nice places there though to live, it will obviously offer you the most options as it is a good 3 times larger than either HHI or Mrtyle. There are other coastal towns in SC, but they are significantly smaller though, such as Beaufort, Georgetown and Edisto Island.

Carolina Forest area of Myrtle Beach (for good schools and low crime)
Bluffton (town right next to Hilton Head--nicely developed area)
Plenty of family-friendly suburbs of Charleston that are at least close to the beaches--places like Mt. Pleasant, Summerville and West Ashley area of Charleston
