thinking on moving
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi , I am from LI and as a single mom, looking to relocate. I work in the health profession and have 2 kids, one is in kindergarden and the other in college. I am looking for a good decent place to live, not the most expensive one, but a good one where school and college that are around are excellent. of course a hospital where I could work. What is a good area in south carolina. Please give me an advice

Simpsonville is great place to live. Virtually no Crime. Greenville's Hospital system is Great you can jump on the I-185 Toll rd. and be there in 15 minutes. The schools are good and you have alot of colleges around. Greenvill tech's brasier campus is right off Georgia Rd. And you also have Clemson and others in the area. There are people moving to Simpsonville from all over and they love it ! You can still get a nice 3 br house for $100-120K and a 4br for $120-150k and there is still some land in the country at good prices!

Hi Kat2K,
You've probably answered this already, but I was wondering what the best public schools in the Charleston County district are (elementary, middle, and high). I have a 2 year old daughter so this is a very important consideration to me. I am moving from the Baltimore area, where private schools are very popular, but is s this also the case in Charleston? If so, are there any that you might recommend?
Thanks!

I highly recommend the Powdersville area near Greenville. It has great schools and is within a short drive to the largest hospital in the state (which is rapidly growing as well). There are lots of new homes in various price ranges, as well as plenty of established homes with land. What general price range are you considering? Hope I can help you find what you are looking for. Greenville is simply an awesome city to live in or nearby - especially if you are raising a family.

Is this a retirement community? How are the prices of homes? What's it near?

This is my first time posting to this site. I found it a few months ago and it looks great. Everyone is so helpful and informative. We are planning to visit South and North Carolina this July (I know it will be hot). We are hoping to move from Lake Oswego, Oregon (Portland metro area) in two to three years or sooner. My husband and I are both originally from sunnier climates and have never gotten used to the cold and rainy "rain season" that lasts 9+ months here. It is very beautiful in the summer, but we would like a place that is warmer. I've visited North Carolina as a child and don't know much about the different areas in the Carolinas except for what I have read in various places.
We have two twin girls that are 5 and starting kindergarten this September. Good schools and education are important. I know for sure that we want some place in the foothills maybe Anderson or Greenville areas because the mountains seem too remote and possibly cold and the low country might be too humid (mold problems) and buggy. Also, I love the rolling hills type of countryside with lakes nearby for their beauty and recreational amenities. I am not looking necessarily for a big city. Portland is much larger than the type of community that I am looking for. Although, I am not ready for a really small town either. We would like someplace that has charm (not just a bunch of strip malls), good schools, good medical facilities, pretty/ scenic location, good economy, low crime, upbeat community with community events like farmers markets, festivals, etc. We are in the real estate / apartment business and would most likely buy and manage some small apartments wherever we move. I know that I am describing a utopia like place, but is there anywhere that sounds like what I am describing? The good news is that we aren't restricted by a job relocation, but this also opens up the state and we need to refine our search.
Thank you all for your help.

Let me go ahead and tell you this; you will be shocked when you see our bodies of water compared to yours in your area. lol! My friend came down from Portland in december and said that our water looked dirty here. I told her it was because alot of our bodies of water were man made and not natural.

They have a website you can quickly find using Google (simply type in the name I provided and it should be the first link to come up). I would provide it for you, but I'm sure it would be mistaken for advertisement, even though I am only attempting to help you find what you are looking for. Yes, it is a retirement village located on 177 beautiful acres near plenty of shopping and not too far from downtown via I-85. It is in a nice part of town, so you don't have to worry about the crime rate at all. The community has buses to get people around town and to events if you need or want a ride, but you can also live independently and drive yourself if you prefer.
Another retirement village that you may want to consider, but which has not yet been built, is the Cascades at Verdae, which is part of the massive Verdae development in the city of Greenville. This sounds like a very nice quality retirement village.
If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to post them here or in the Greenville subforum and we'll be glad to help in any way possible.
