Port Royal is a wonderful place to live. most of the town is indistinguishable from Beaufort, but they have a great little historic downtown of their own (which, bytheway, is going to go through some major transformation when the sale of the port goes through.... ). there are no golf course's in the town limits, but just across the bridge, there is the cat island golf course (i think it's called the south carolina national now). there are plenty of private and public course's in the area. fishing is very popular, heck, everyone gets out on the river during the summer for one reason or another. you may find the nightlife wanting, but downtown beaufort is only a 5-10 minute drive from anywhere in port royal, and there is a vibrant restaurant/bar scene along the waterfront park.

the population of port royal on city-data doesn't appear to be accurate. port royal has recently been on an annexation spree and 8,000 is more likely. the beaufort cluster (beaufort, port royal, lady's island, shell point, burton, etc.) has more people than most realize (60-70 k), and feels like one big town.

if you are considering moving, or coming to check out the area in person, now may not be the best time. at the moment the whole area is going through a crisis, one of our bridges has been damaged and it will be at least august before it is repaired. this has forced all traffic leading to lady's island (pop. 12,000) and the other sea islands to take our 2 lane historic swing bridge in downtown beaufort and 4-5 hour waits in traffic are not uncommon. needless to say, if you come to visit now you will not get an accurate impression of quality of life for the area.

Looking at townhouses in Pooler GA as these will be almost identical to the ones being built in Port Royal....

I'll have to research how to get there with out sitting in 2 hour traffic
Weekend better???

Hi Kat, hope you don't mind if I jump in

Sun City is a Del Webb community -- address is Fort Mill, but it's really in Indian Land -- it's a 55 and older community. My parents just closed on their home there and they love it. There is still a lot under construction, but I have heard that the golf course is very nice. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Default It's so nice of you to offer...

To give out information to all of us. Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

My hubby and I will be doing a relocation visit the middle of May. We have two daughters - 15 & 11. We are looking to get information on as many different towns as we can. We currently live in a rural area on the Eastern Shore of MD. We want to purchase a country home on at least 5 acres - would like to be able to raise beef cows. Good schools are a must! I'm a RN and he's a Road Service Tech for an Ag company. Obviously must be able to find jobs in healthcare and Ag related industries. Would like to be rural, but within an hours drive of major shopping, etc. Would also like to be within a 2-3 hour drive of the coast.

I know it's a tall order, but any suggestions or help would be most appreciated! Thanks so much!

Talking thinking about relocating

Hi there,

I am a mid-30's female thinking about re-locating for a job opportunity in Horry County. I really enjoy all kinds of fitness activities (softball, cycling, motorcycles, etc...) and wondered if you could give me some info on the area. I live in a fairly decent size city (approx. 100,000) and am worried about culture shock. Also, I am coming from western PA so I am very curious about the differences in weather. I guess I am just really nervous and looking for some comfort regarding my decision. I will be moving by myself (with my dog) and want to make sure I develop a support group from the start. Thanks so much for your time.

Question Relocation to South Carolina

Hi I am new to this posting thing but thought I'd give this a try to speak to people who live in this state. Anyways, we may be relocating to the Florence, SC area. After reading these blogs, I'm getting a LOT of mixed messages and I'm very worried about this relocation. I am trying to be the most informed that I can be. I'm extremely scared of the schools and have done my research on them and all of the "Report Cards" are awful on the Florence schools. Can someone tell me what the "real deal" is with the schools? My children are currently in wonderful schools in PA with EXCELLENT ratings. They are 6th grade and 7th graders. I just would like to make an informed decision for my family.

Also, crime rates etc. is Florence, a good area to live in? Are their youth sporting activities for children? I currently have a son who plays ice hockey and baseball and a daughter who plays soccer. Any and all information about the Florence area would be much appreciated. Schools, Crime, neighboorhoods etc.?

Hi,

Horry is a nice county, home to Myrtle Beach so you're never far from the beach. Given that, like I said, Myrtle Beach is there, there are plenty of 'fitness' opportunities and events around I'm sure. If there wasn't anything pleasing, you could always go down to Charleston for the day or something, they're ALWAYS having fitness-type things, the bridge run once a year, etc.

Motorcycles...MB is a big destination for bikers. Visit http://www.ridemyrtlebeach.com/ for more info ... there is also 'Bike Week' that happens every year.

The climate is tolerable in the summer [although hot!] and mild in the winter. Snow is rare.

Good luck!
