My son and his wife are considering relocated to South Caroline. My main concern is they are a mixed race couple with two beautiful little mixed race children. My main question is how would they be welcomed. Would the children be treated differently? Would my son and his wife be treated badly? They are both wonderful people with a lot to offer but I do worry about acceptance in the south. I would appreciate any and all responses. I know how it was when I was growing up (I'm 66 now) but I don't know how it might be now. It is very acceptable in So. California but how about S. Carolina?

I am beginning to see more and more interracial relationships here, so they really shouldn't have a problem. There will always be your narrow-minded bigots, but they will not be your biggest concern (or even a concern at all). The main factor here may be if you are planning to move into a metropolitan area or a rural area, as there will naturally be more tolerance in the former, but you won't get hanged if you choose to settle down in the latter.

Shouldn't be much of a problem its the south afterall, Interracial relationships are nothing new there (200-300 years of black and white people living in the same region it's bound to happen). I my self am in an interracial relationship and I've never had an issue, but that's just been my experience. And I agree with the above statement it is more common and usually more accepted to see interracial couples in urban areas of the state (Columbia, Charleston, & Greenville) rural areas tend to be a bit more left in the 1800's but it's not as bad as hollywood would make the south seem.

Even though it is considered to be a very conservative city, Greenville has become pretty diverse in the past 10 years and I have seen plenty of interracial couples in my visits there lately. Not sure about Charleston, but I'm sure there's a good amount there also.
In Columbia I had a co-worker that was married to an African-american [both Southern] and told me about a few encounters before with some 'good ole boys' they had there, said they were rather irritating but there still in the area so it must not have been that bad. |

I love hearing various dialogue spoken all over the city. It is easy to see that this is not an ordinary old southern city as some think. The shades and colors of skin are as variable as you will see anywhere else in SC. As I have said elsewhere in this forum, the vast majority of people here are accepting of any culture no matter how unique it may be. You just need to come visit us and see for yourself. |

I am in TN so I will put my two cents in. I have a widowed black friend whose two children (5 and 8) spend alot of time w/me and my son (3). I am a white female. When the 4 of us are out, we do get a lot of stares. Ppl trying to figure out if the children are mine or just ppl who don't approve of interracial couples (assuming the children are mine). While we have never had anyone say or do anything, it can be uncomfortable. However, it has never become unsafe nor do I feel the children even notice. There's always some ignorant person anywhere you go but overall, times are achangin'.
