Default Sanford's car pulled for speeding, but no ticket

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A Highway Patrol trooper stopped South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's car for speeding and asked his protective detail driver why he was driving so fast, but let them go without issuing a ticket after he shook the governor's hand, a video released Wednesday shows.

With all the heat on Sanford he should at the very least had the trooper give the driver a warning ticket. But, Sanford, being the "Chief Law Enforcement Officer" in SC, should have told the driver to stop speeding before he was pulled over.

I'm sure he was on his way to an important meeting with some Latin stimulus package. Sounds like a certified emergency to me....

Update: they did issue a speeding ticket to the driver after the fact. I really feel sorry for the trooper, who was really put in a spot. Not sure what I would have done.

I think the officer who stopped Sanford (Salter?) did a great job. It is easy to be intimidated when you pull over a car and the governor is in the passenger seat.

Salter asks: "You got a good reason for running 85?" The agent responds he's driving Sanford. "Not a really good reason to be speeding," Salter replies.

I used to live in New Jersey (can you tell) where Governor Corzine was nearly killed in an accident where he was being driven at excessive speed on the highway by a State Police driver, for no real good reason. Corzine wasn't wearing a seatbelt at the time. I wonder if Sanford was. But the point is that the governor need not endanger himself and others on the highway for no good reason. Like Salter said.....

hey that's no worse than the governer of nj being driven at 95 mph by state troopers and getting in a car wreck and not getting any kind of tickets at all. that goes to show you that there is in fact people being above the law.

I don't think Sanford's driver should get the ticket. That just means the driver gets in trouble, probably loses his job. Sanford was part of the congressional delegation that called for Bill Clinton's head when he lied about having an affair on Hillary. Clearly he should be subject to the same high level of standards that Sanford forced on everyone else. They should go ahead and impeach him and be done with it.
