I have never moved before. DO I need to re-register to vote in a new state ? Does SC register by party ? Can you only vote in primaries if registered by party ?
AS part of our move my husband promised to register to vote this coming election. How does he start from scratch ? Thanks |

Yes, when you register your vehicles they will give you a voter registration form. What surprised me when I registered was that they do not ask for your party affiliation. I have been told that you as a registered voter in SC you can vote in any primary. Can someone confirm this?

You can vote any any ONE primary. Not both.

And you can change parties if you want...one election you can vote Democrat, and the next primary, vote Republican. SC doesn't care which way you vote, just that you only vote once an election. Liz

The practice of not registering by party is a throwback to the glory days of ol Strom Thurman. Strom was a Republican, but at the time, very few South Carolinians would admit to being Republican, so Strom's people made it easy by eliminating party registration. But South Carolina is far from the only state that soes not register voters by party.
