Default Need Advice on Hilton Head/Bluffton Area

Hi we are a married couple from Ohio thinking of relocating to Hilton Head/Bluffton area. We also have a 5 year old son. Some of my questions/concerns are: how are the schools, are the alligators really that bad, how much trouble with hurricanes, how much trouble with tornadoes? Also, my husband is in computer repair, is there a shortage of jobs there? Any help would be appreciated......

Maggie

Hi Maggie,

I also am relocating to there from the NJ area. My parents have lived on the island now for 3 years and they love it. I have a two yeard old daughter. I'm looking foward to reading any responses you get. I know that the alligators aren't that bad

Has anyone heard anything on the Estates at Westbury? I'm looking for a rental, and that area keeps popping up. I'm familiar with the housing section, but not the townhouses. Is it a safe area?

Thanks!
Michelle

I don't think they have to worry about tornadoes...and I'm pretty sure that my mother said that they haven't been hit by a hurricane in a really long time, b/c they're inland. but i will make sure to ask next time I talk to her. what area were you thinking about looking at? i'm trying to find a rental right now, and I really like Westbury Park.

Most of the storms that come up the coast pass through the Savannah/Hilton Head/Bluffton area. I tend to pay closer attention to them because A.) I have in-laws that live there (Bluffton) and B.) whatever happens there usually ends up here (the Charleston area). I seem to remember a couple of times where tornadoes were reported in the Bluffton area. Bluffton really isn't that far inland, a hurricane making landfall in Hilton Head certainly could do some major damage there.

Hilton Head is not 'inland', it is an island right on the coast. Bluffton is a little inland, but still would be effected greatly if a hurricane struck the area.

It's not as prone to hurricanes as say Florida or the gulf states, but there have been some hurricanes/tropical storms that have passed through the area; although the major hurricanes such as Gracie & Hugo came ashore further north in Beaufort & Charleston.

Schools from what I know are pretty good in Bluffton/Hilton Head area. A lot of newer schools especially in Bluffton.

I'm not too concerned about the hurricanes (at least you get some warning with them) but being from Ohio I am concerned about tornadoes....I fear them the most lol.......Thanks for all your advice......

Waterspouts have caused damage to homes in the Forest Beach area of Hilton Head. With that exception tornadoes are not really a problem here.
