You see guys its these kind of comments that I worry about.
This is not called for. Up north we would not have said that we had enough "SOUTHERNS" in the north!
I wonder what Paula Dean would say about this comment?
We are all "Americans" and should learn to live together no matter what our original state.
Hellow, it also has something to do with economics.
Some Southerners may not like our Northern sound but we do bring money and thus jobs!!!

S/he is going to encounter some people who hate Yankees, that's a fact. How s/he reacts will determine how the rest of us treat him/her.

hate the haters
If you encounter someone who " hates Yankees" and he's not a Red Sox fan, than there is a problem. Anyone who hates someone because of where they're from ain't worth dealin with. Walk away from the ignorant bigot. Life's too short to be tolerant of intolerance. Bayhill, you'll find god-fearin, flag-wavin, walmart-shoppin, nascar-watchin, mullet-wearin, homophobic, xenophobes anywhere you move. But probably more likely in South Carolina.

Am in the process of moving from the virgin islands to Coumbia SC. I have had absolutely no problem. No outsider issues. Because of the billion dollar research facilities regarding nano-technology& hydrogen fuel cells many people are moving to the area from various ethnic backgrounds. Everyone I have run into including clerks at the local gas stations or stores go out of their way to try & make me feel welcome. Pretty much if you are friendly & nice to people they will respond in kind. Even outside the city center of Columbia in the Harbison & Irmo areas people have been very welcoming. I don't know about the extremely rural areas but they are probably the same as extremely rural areas in any state. I grew up in Philadelphia, spent several years in Clearwater Florida prior to moving to the Virgin Islands. The Columbia area has the most friendly people of anywhere I have lived. My son has been living in the New Brunswick area of New Jersey for several years. He is also moving to Columbia because the people are so much nicer there. Hope this helps.

Why is it a problem and what do you know about South Carolina living in The People's Republic of California?

Most folks in the south are very friendly and very welcoming. Although I grew up here in SC, I also came from non-religious, English parents that are the polar opposite of most southerners. I am pretty liberal when it comes to most things, also the opposite of most southerners, but I have rarely come across many bigots. Yes many of my friends are religious and I tend to disagree with them politically but none of them are these god fearing, KKK folks that people have visions of.
Also, in the larger cities such as Charlotte (although I live in SC just over the border), about 40% of the population is from somewhere other than the south. On my block, there are two other families besides me that I can think of that are originally from SC. I've got an upstate NY'er on one side, a californian on the other, a bostonian behind me, a pennsylvanian catycornered behind me and we all get along JUST FINE. As a matter of fact, hardly a week goes by that we aren't all getting together for a cookout or get-to-gether in the summer!
I will say that some folks are pretty hard core southerners way out in the country but that probably isn't where people are moving to anyway.
We are all americans and we all do get along just fine, well most of us that is!
My vote is for Fort Mill, SC!

They're in the cities too. Nothing bad about it. They're just proud of their country.

"Friendly"?
You know, you have to be careful about describing some place as "friendly" or "unfriendly." I was reading on cnn.com that Charleston, SC once again won "Most Friendly" city in the US. Clearly the people who voted have one definition of friendly. There was even research some years back in some of these "friendly" southern cities that found that people often were outwardly friendly but once you weren't around - not so friendly (talking about you behind your back). In other areas of the country (esp. the Northeast) people will be more direct with you. This is perceived as unfriendly by others, but I think it's basically decent. I'd much rather have someone be honest with me than talk about me behind my back.
I lived in the south for many years and really have mixed reactions to the native southerners as far as friendliness goes. Some seemed very friendly but some were extraordinarily nasty underneath, especially about "outsiders." The things I heard about me and other non-southerners when they didn't know I could hear or was a northener myself! My experience after moving back north is that people in the north don't seem to have xenophobia about those coming from other parts of the country. Well, city folk that come to the country sometimes are disliked (e.g., NYC people who come to other parts of NY but I think this city/country attitude is common across the country). But outside of this, you don't hear northerners telling southerners to go back home, for example. I've known a few people who moved back from the south because there was so much hostility towards them because they were from the north (usually passive-aggressive) that it really soured them on the south.
So, again, "friendly" really gets defined in some weird ways!
