Jim Island is just 'Roun de creek" from Coffin Island ("Kaw-fun Eyelun").
Some folks won't stay there to this day without 'nuff spoofy dust.

Ever heard of Mosquito Beach? Where is it? Went to College with some guys from Chucktown and they used to say that you should never go to Mosquito Beach or and area on the Pennisula called "Back The Green"? If you let me know I will give you a "case quotah"

In my youth I often partied at the Casper Club; nothin' bad out there. Even let buckras in.
To get to Mosquito Beach, go down Folly, then take a right on Sol Legare Rd.
"Back of the Green" refers to the old Fiddlers Green area. It's where the PD HQ is.
Mother was born in a house there back in the '20s.
Never heard of "Chucktown", though.

It may be, but to someone who grew-up there in the 50's-60's, "Chucktown" is as foreign and vulgar as saying "West Ashley" or "East Cooper" (and pronouncing the oo's as in "ooh" and not "aah".
It hurts my damn ears.
But then it's not my damn city anymore, is it?
So call it what you will.
PS: And before assumes any anger in those "damns", none was meant, and none existed.

I believe "Chucktown" was coined more in the late 80s or early 90s...I don't live in Charleston, but I have watched over the years as the city has changed.. for better or worse I guess depends on your perspective. Some folks who still live there do not seem to like many of the changes in terms of more chains stores downtown, more expensive, loss of uniqueness, more traffic etc.. others love how it has been "redeveloped" in places, the variety and diversity of people from other places living in the City. I can see both sides I guess the challenge is how do you strike a balance

It all depends upon individual tastes, and how (or even if) they ever translate into a community consensus, in my opinion......

Geechie North, just curious but what dialect are some of your slang terms from?
Is it Charleston or Geechie or black folks that aren't Geechie?
I live in the Upstate and don't really hear some the words you have pronounced by white Southerners here. Ex: South Kuhlina, etc.

Are these slang terms across the board, as far as "black vs white"? Are there differences between black slang and white slang, and accents? Just curious.
