Hello,

I'm planning on moving to SC in the next year from NJ and also buy a new vehicle. Would it be less expensive to buy it here or wait until I get there. I realize it would be easier to wait and buy it there then I don't have to drive it there but how are the car prices in SC and what is the sales tax you pay for a car? Does anyone know a good site that compares car/truck prices state to state? Thank you

Before you can register your vehicle in South Carolina, you must first pay the property taxes that are required in the county in which you reside. You will have to pay property taxes annually thereafter figured on the current value and mileage of your car. You will notice that there are a lot of older cars on the roads around here! I think this must be why. We had a 2005 F150 that cost $700 in property taxes last year, we were glad when we sold it back in April! We take out money and put it into a savings account during the year just to pay our vehicle property taxes. Ours are due in December and it is no fun writing out a $900 check right before Christmas for property taxes!

Sales tax totaling 5% of the vehicle purchase price ($300.00 maximum) must be paid when you register a newly purchased vehicle in South Carolina.

I found this in a search, because I am purchasing a vehicle from someone in AL, and don't know where to begin with the registration process. I'll buy it there (private sale), then drive it back to SC (Richland County) It looks like I pay taxes in the county. . .then what is the sequence from there? Get it insured? Apply for a tag? I get a car about every ten years, so I'm a novice at this!

Thanks.

South Carolina only charges $300 in sales tax for a car purchase regardless of the cost of the car. However, they do have personal property taxes that you have to pay on the car each year. The first year is a killer and goes down each year as your value decreases. You can contact the county assessor in the county you chose to live in for a quote before you purchase a particular vehicle. (The price varies from county to county).
Hope this helps.
