Tornadoes do not typically come from "just" nowhere. There is usually an associated weather front that moves through with most tornadoes. You best defense is to be aware of the weather forecasts and learn to recognize the conditions that are most likely to produce tornadoes.
Now earthquakes on the other hand scare me.

Why move there?
Basically some are saying ... deal with it. Its just part of living on the coast.
Is it somewhat irresponsible to move there, if you have the choice of where to live? Even assuming you can afford good insurance and you can evacuate easily, why take a chance on having your home and everything you own blown to smithereens?

Lowcountry, that makes sense. It would be cool to live somewhere with a view of the ocean, but I'd rather live where I don't have to really worry much about hurricanes and drive less than 2 hours to the beach when I feel like it. When people buy or build a home close to the coast, they should do so with open eyes and know that there is a good possibility they will someday deal with damage from a hurricane.

???
I REALLY don't mean to sound rude or anything. Due to the fact of that this is a GREAT SITE! And everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but.... wouldn't we all live a much safer life not driving??? Driving is risky! Move to a larger city, walk, ride a bicycle to work (maybe, that could be unsafe also!) Well...so could walking for some!! Ha, Ha!
No.... seriously. It's great to have choices in life. Sometimes people do not even have a choice! We are all talking about living/moving by beaches, beautiful mountains etc. Not many people even can consider doing that! We are all lucky to have choices. Lucky to have a computer to talk back and forth, e-mail, look things up etc. BEFORE actually moving. THAT IS GREAT!!
Everyone have a great day!!!

I choose to get in my car everyday and risk being killed by the 1000's of people on the road with me. Some drunk and some on drugs Anything can happen anywhere. I'll enjoy the coast as long as I can and I'll pay the large insurance premium that goes with it.

I'm right there with ya! (Well, not quite yet) I'm ready though! You can't help but worry about some things. But I agree, a hurricane gives plenty of warning to get out. I live on the Arkansas, Oklahoma boarder. Lots of tornadoes. They suck! You never know when they'll pop up. (Usually at night though, which is scarey!) Anyway..... Just finished putting new siding on my add-on and the old part of my house. Need to paint it, finish grouting my tile, lay the wood floor and put it on the market!! Ready for the coast! We have property in Forestbrook just inland of MB. Bye!!!!

I was born and have maintained a home in SC for 60+ years in the Charleston area. In my life time there have been only two really bad storms. Gracie in '59 and Hugo in '89. I was in my home for both. That said, if I know that a cat 3 or higher storm is likely to hit near me I am heading for our cabin in NC. Hurricanes are nothing to take likely. Am I worried, no way. I will take a hurricane over tornadoes any day. With a hurricane you have days notice to get out of town.

I can agree with the fact you can sort of get a warning of a "possible" tornado. Weather forcasts show the severe storms and there are certain "seasons" for tornadoes too. But unless you have a good shelter, preferably underground, most homes don't stand a chance with the tornadoes that are in the central U.S.. Of course you could just get in your vehicle and drive away somewhere whenever there is a severe t-storm warning. Personally I don't like living like that.
