Real Estate question from a Yankee...
We are NYers looking to relocate next spring to Dorchester County or Berkeley County. Looking at homes for sale, I keep seeing in the details that there is a FROG listed on lots of homes....what the heck is a FROG??
Also, there are two families coming down. One wants to be very, very rural with acreage and the other would like a suburban area with about a half acre of land. We'd like to be about 10-15 min. apart due to shared custody of kids.
Any suggestions??

Thank you, it was really bugging me! I think we'll turn our storage over our garage into one and advertise it here in NY so everyone can ask ME what a FROG is, LOL. I'm glad so many houses have them b/c we have a 14 year old daughter and an 11 year old right behind her.....it would be nice to have a place to put them on "bad attitude" days!!
BTW, no basements?? Where do you folks go during those bad thunderstorms and hurricanes? We get some doozies up here in the summer and we go to the basement.

I also just moved down from NY a week ago (orange county) and wanted a FROG, but we settled on a home w/o one. Oh well, still love it more than NY.

Frogs
Actually FROG means Finished Room Over Garage, as opposed to an UNFROG, which is an Unfinished Room Over Garage..
No basements due to the water table, with rare exceptions for people who can afford the extra, extra thick walls with multiple waterproofing measures. I know of only one basement in the Lowcountry, although I'm sure there are a few more.

The water table is too high in most areas here for basements - I know, I'm from NJ and searched for one in Columbia. Only 10% of the homes in Columbia have basements and I bet its even less near the coast. A basement may be the place to go during a tornado, but they would probably get flooded during a hurricane. SC is not a particularly bad area for tornadoes and they are usually F0-F2's, not the big ones like in the midwest. BTW, I've always heard that FROG stands for "Finished Room Over Garage".

When hurricanes come, we evacuate. Then we leave town.

Many homes in Lakeshore (Tega Cay) have basements.
