One thing that stands out as inaccurate, is your claim that most local children attend OP. OP has an enrollment of 800 (scisa.org), compared to public school enrollment of 15,000 (schoolmatters.com) for Orangeburg County school districts.

Perhaps what you were trying to say is, "Orangeburg Prep students are mostly white." That would have been accurate.

Default Another cost of living question...

I have heard that even though the cost of living in the south in generally a lot cheaper than up north, Charleston as a city is pretty expensive. Is that true, and is that true for all of the areas directly surrounding the city of Charleston as well? Is there anyone out there who can accurately compare the overall cost of living in Charleston to that of Portland, Oregon? Thanks!!

Hi we moved from Pembroke Pines 11 monhts ago...we live in a small town outside of rock hill....we love it...

i have 3 girls....the youngest loves it here.... shes in middle school.. the high schooler and my 19th year old are not too crazy about it.....I was born here but moved to Florida when I was 10 years old... Floridas cost of living is crazy...

My main complaint here..or concern is the way MOST PEOPLE LOOK AND STARE AT YOU OR HOW THEY AUTOMATICALLY THINK YOU ARE MEXICAN (NO DISRESPECT TO MEXICANS) JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE BROWN SKIN AND DARK HAIR ..... I am not Hispanic but my Husband is Cuban and my 2 older children look hispanic....and when we go out everyone just stares.... To those of you who dont know... there are many different cultures such as cubans, puerto ricans, mexicans, hondurians, etc.... that ARE LEGAL!!! AND HAVE WORKED IN THE U.S. FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE PAID THEIR TAXES.... so people please be a little more considerate....
this is the bible belt right?????

Maybe its not because they assume you're Mexican or illegal - maybe they've just never seen anyone that looks like you. Maybe they are admiring your beautiful brown skin. I grew up in a very rural area of SC (Nichols) and I don't believe I saw anyone other than white or black until Middle School - when an Asian family moved to our district. So don't automatically assume the worst about them - it could be totally different than what you think. Living in LA has made me realize how un-diverse SC still is. But it's growing and changing everyday.

I know you will love the difference in the cost of living- we do have the lowest utility costs here in Orangeburg-- the lowest in the entire state!! After you are here a while you learn that people are friendly here and that as in all towns there are areas to avoid- people to avoid-- and many to be enjoyed- call me if you have specific questions or if certain rumours have bothered you-- mostly myth-- some of the older folks here who are use to running the show resist new people coming in and sometimes are known to speak ill of our community to detour others--yet they stay-- go figure

Rentals begin with $200 a month, cost of living is 80% of US average. Not sure about jobs or schools. Comfortable weather for most of the year. Very high vehicle tax. Feels different than Florida or North Carolina.
