SC's education standards are among the highest in the nation according to U.S. Department of Education.
The study shows, for example, that:
* In fourth-grade reading, only Massachusetts has a higher standard.
* South Carolina is also second highest in the nation in the standard for eighth-grade reading, with North Carolina the lowest.
* The state is second highest in the eighth-grade math standard.

Thanks this is really great. Just emailed the link to some family and friends that thought I was hurting my kids by moving them from PA to Sc.

No, Sixinthefamily, you won't be hurting your children educationally by moving to SC IF you move to the right area and the RIGHT schools. I have taught in Charleston for 23 years and can tell you from experience that there are schools here where I wouldn't send my pets but there are schools which I would put up against any of the top private or public schools in the nation! I happen to teach at one of the top rated elementary schools in the state and when we get transfer students from Northern or Midwestern states, they are at least 6 months to a year behind our students. One of my students moved with her family (dad was transferred) to PA last year and her mom e-mailed me that the schools didn't even begin to compare to our elementary school. Just be careful and do your research before moving to an area and buying a house....schools within a 10 mile radius can be as different as night and day.

We moved from NJ to SC Myrtle Beach in March. We live in the Carolina Forest area and my son is in lst. grade. They are so much further ahead in SC then NJ. I feel bad for him because of right now he will be tutored over the summer to get his reading up.
In NJ we didn't have "levels" of reading - here he needs to read at a leve 12 to get into 2nd. grade. He was behind a little in NJ but not as bad as here. Also Math is different, they use Everday Mathamatics and is taught totally different then what he is use to.

I'm so glad you found and article and posted it online. I think most people thought I was crazy for saying this all the time, but I know it is true first hand since I'm in the school system.

This is very encouraging to read. We are hoping to relocate around the Charlotte region next year. I am so tired of people making comments about the quality of education outside of NJ. As if this is the only state in the nation to get a good education. There are good and bad schools everywhere. Thanks for posting.

Yes, we have high standards here in NY too BUT finding schools that actually MEET them is another thing. But it's good to know for those of us considering moving down that many schools are meeting standards that are high. Thank you!
