Anderson will be a good choise if you are trying to get the small town feel. It has that but its large enough that it gets a lot of the big chain stores. I don't know much about the schools in Anderson County, other than NE Anderson in the Powdersville area (I think thats District 1?) which I know to be good. Centerville is towards the lake on the west side of Anderson, if memory serves, so its probably a good location.

SW Pickens County also has good schools. You might want to check out the Clemson and Central area. Clemson is a college town though- so keep than in mind if you decide on that area (traffic can be a problem during major events... football, basketball, etc).

I have 5 children here in Anderson - 4 attending the HANNA/Concord area - District 5 schools. Some of the best - we have a great statewide score card. You can contact district 5 and I'm sure they'll be happy to send you the card. (ANDERSON SCHOOL DISTRICT 5) HANNA/MIDWAY is where the money is - have heard from those attending there that it is very "who's who-ish" if you like that sort of thing.

Clemson was rated the top three areas to retire - lots of retirees moving up here from Florida. I live in Anderson School District 5 - have 4 children in the district and have all done very well. I am very pleased with the schools (have one in each level - elementary, middle and high) - the administration and teachers are very good. Upstate has good reputation for school - coastal areas bring down statewide scores.
