Woodside is one of the more exclusive neighborhoods in Aiken with Cedar Creek running a close, and up and coming, second. Houndslake doesn't compare, in my opinion.
Cedar Creek is about 15-20 min from 'downtown' Aiken. However, given the traffic, Woodside is just as far.

Aiken
My husband and I took a detour on our last trip up from Florida. We got into town on a Sunday night so everything was very quiet. But We liked what we saw of Aiken. We had a nice meal in a little bistro with a jazz group, and found the horse crowd in the bistro friendly (and younger). We are looking for a retirement location. Aiken seems promising but I have found the internet listing for the resale homes somewhat disappointing. I would like some advice on who to talk to. My parents are also looking and we may end up purchasing a family property. IF any one has a line on a good web site or agent we would appreciate it. The golf communities are appealing but I am a bit worried about getting into another HOA- I have good and bad experience. I think I would prefer a little more land or a old established neighborhood.

Liz, that sounds exactly like the kind of neighborhood I'd like to live in.
I found this thread while searching for information on the Gem Lakes subdivision. My husband really likes the idea of having a swimming lake and a fishing lake nearby. But I'm leery of living out in the middle of nowhere in a subdivision with no stores or sidewalks where you have to drive to go anyplace, so the idea of living in a downtown neighborhood really appeals to me.

I hope you don't mind my replying to your older post asking for a ranking of developments. I see from later posts, you're still looking. I think of Cedar Creek as being far from conveniences, like a grocery store. I may be wrong, but I think your choices nearby would be limited. I would agree that driving 8 miles into Aiken to go to dinner wouldn't be a big deal, at all. Woodside, which really isn't that much closer to the heart of town than Cedar Creek, is near the mall and a couple of grocery stores.
As for a gated community, I have a personal aversion, but that's my issue, not yours. However, I know some residents, current and former, who are annoyed by the need to call up the gatehouse when friends want to get in. No one living outside Woodside can just drop by.
Lastly, and again this is a personal issue, I'm just about McMansioned out. You'll find those sorts of homes in all three developments, but Houndslake has a wider variety of homes from which to choose. For the reasons I've given, I'd choose Houndslake first, Cedar Creek second and Woodside third. If you're more interested in exclusivity, you'd probably rank them in reverse of me.

Don't forget about all the new development on Whiskey Road, which will put Cedar Creek much closer to the 'conveniences' mentioned prior.

Travel time
Thanks to everyone for your replys,,, they are very helpful.
We are retired so taking 10, 20 or 30 mins. to drive some place is really not a major concern in making our decision about where we live. The neighborhood is far more important than if I have to drive, 20 min. or 10 min. The only place I have to get to on time these days is the doctors office, and I don't mind being late to those appintments? LOL,,,,
I was curious to know what development is being built between Cedar Creek and downtown Aiken?
Thanks again to all that have contributed to this thread,,,,Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,,,,

I sent you a reply on the questions you had concerning palm trees in the Aiken area. We are in North Augusta with another location in Augusta, but we service the Aiken area as well. Call me if you have any further questions about tropical trees and plants.

Just got back from our second trip to Aiken to look for property. Put an offer in at a new subdivision in Trenton and didn't get it , the developer decided to keep it. It was perfect for us..horse community etc. The only thing is, everyone told us not to go N. of Aiken, and I'd like to know why.
