Personal Property Tax in South Carolina
I lived in NY and leased my car there in January. I moved to SC in June. I paid the personal property tax on my vehicle here. I just received my car payment with an increase of $17 per month. Ford Credit tells me that SC added this increase. My leased vehicle cost was calulated with NYS taxes. Does anyone know why I'm paying this?

The counties in SC collect it. I just paid for my car in NC and the 3% taxes on it there. Now I have to pay it in York County AGAIN. I would leave it in NC, but that would screw up my multi-policy discount for insurance, plus I need the owner-occupied residency tax or my home property tax ill be 2% more.
Oh and they send you a *&^%! bill for it every year.

Twill, if you paid the personal property tax in NY for a year it appears to me you would be due a refund from NY since you just resided there 5 months. I don't understand the additional charge by Ford Credit do they escrow your personal property tax on a vehicle? I do know you will pay personal property tax to the SC county you live in every single year or you won't get a license tag from the DMV.
groove1 ... you don't have to pay sales tax in North Carolina if you purchase a vehicle there to bring into South Carolina. You are exempt from NC and can pay SC. A maximum sales tax of $300 is imposed on the purchase of motor vehicles, including recreational vehicles, boats, motorcycles and airplanes purchased out of state. But .... you still gotta give York County the personal property tax forever and ever! And if you will look closely at your tax notice from the county very little of the money goes to county operations. The largest percentage goes to education.

Typically on a lease you pay state sales tax on the amount of your payment each month. Perhaps the state sales tax on a leased vehicle is higher in SC than NY?

I bought it 3 months ago before I knew I was moving to SC. So I paid the tax already to NC and I wont count on a refund.

Sales Tax
There is no personal property tax in New York State. I paid the sales tax up front on the leased vehicle as that is what the law is in NYS. Now SC is making me pay sales tax again. I have been in touch with the Senator's office and the Governor's office. I think I'll win this one. I should not be doubly taxed. New York does not give a refund on the sales tax.

Sales tax on leased vehicles
there is no personal property tax in NY. The sales tax on a leased vehicle must be paid up front on all the payments which on my vehicle is 39 payments. Moving to SC, they are now charging me sales tax on the vehicle again but SC charges the sales tax on each payment per month.

South Carolina has raised it's sales tax to 7% (more in some counties) starting from JUNE 2007. Unfortunately SC DOR did not update their information pretty much almost anywhere yet even if it's already August.
You're paying for the climate and the sunshine and the territory that's 65% wooded plus the ocean coastline and the mountains, so it's a pretty good deal even if the sales tax comes up to 50% some day, isn't it?
