I'm always browsing here in the winter dealing with the start realization that North Dakota along with eastern SD are among the coldest areas in the country, where it doesn't get above freezing from late Nov through early March, pondering if a good job is worth living in such a cold area.. maybe once I hit the 5 year mark I can transfer to a sister plant of my current employer such as the one in springfield, MO or something.

Rapid City and the southern hills are much more temperate than any other parts of either state. While the winters are longer there are many more nice days. It isn't impossible for it to be 60+ a couple of days in January in Hot Springs or Rapid City. Also another item to consider is that SD has no personal or corporate income tax, even on dividends and capital gains. Both states have weathered the recession very well as ND is #1 and SD #2 in economic strength throughout the ordeal.

Also if you move to SD expect there to be dumpy little video lottery casinos everywhere you go. The state depends heavily on gambling for its budget. That bothers some people.
