Smiths "REXALL" Drug Store. Loved the salted nut display case.
I actually think about moving back there from time to time.

Yes it hasn't changed that much such as in the big cities that have become concrete jungles.
A skating rink would open every summer, I worked one season as a skate boy.
I was born in a little house on the corner of E.2nd St intersected by W second street across from the High School. Then we moved next door South.

I'm going back this summer for a visit. I have tons of far flung relatives. Of course things will be changed as attitude changes but I'm very curious. Anyway, it will bring tears to my eyes as I float into the past from seeing places long forgotten then renewed.

I went back two years ago. Had a really nice visit with some old friends and neighbors. Spent some time walking around on the old farm, and drove up to the top of the "big hill" in the pasture. Was nice to be able to see clearly for miles and miles. Nothing but bright blue sky, not a trace of smog anywhere.

There is going to be a big celebration in July I believe for the centenial. Maybe I can make it. Might be hard to find a place to stay for a couple of days. In the Lemmon Leader, there was an article on Dad Lemmon, the founder in 1907. My Grandfather and Grandmother lived there in about 1919.

TO ANYONE who lives in, has lived in, or is interested in Lemmon South Dakota---I reccomend the following book: DAKOTA- A SPIRITUAL GEOGRAPHY, written by Kathleen Norris. She also wrote the book AMAZING GRACE. She is a great author. Raised in Lemmon S.D. and Hawaii. Lived and wrote in New York City. Now is back in Lemmon. To anyone who loves Lemmon, has fond memories of it or is just curious about it---you will LOVE the book!! It is a little over 200 pages--I have read it twice. I lived in Rapid City in the 70s and have always loved South Dakota. Sadly, I have not seen Lemmon. Next year when I visit S.D. again, Lemmon will be first on my list to visit. If you have any questions about the book, feel free to PM me!!

Another good book is called "South Dakotas Ziebach County" History of the Prairie dedicated to those who were beckoned to the call of the Great Plains.
I moved away at age 15 around 1940 but as the saying goes, "You can take the person out of the prairie but you can't take the prairie out of the person. And that holds true with me.
Incidently, I oerdered Kathleen Norris book Dakota-a Spiritual Geography sp I am looking forward to reading it.
There is a Centenial Book put out in Lemmon which I have recieved.

I also ordered the Centennial Book. There is a LOT of reading to do...400 plus pages. I thumbed through it when it arrived and then last week when I flew back to SD, I took it with me and left it for my parents to read. Hopefully they send it back in a few months....or I guess I could go pick it up in person!

In small town, there is not a lot of recreation so gossip is a form of a pastime. Sometimes that can be very disturbing.
I am on the process of reading Kathleen Norris's book "Dakota, a Spiritual Geography" and this book certainly brings back my childhood to me. Everyone there accepts the Dakota weather as a normal part of life. One thing you are never bored because every morning, there would be something to look forward to, "What is the weather like today?" The first heavy snow was very exciting. I still remember the high winds with bits of heavy dust blowing in your face and what a comfort it was to enter your home from the cold and the wind. I felt secure inside listening to the wind ourside. We would get together with a bunch of children and make paths in the snow.

I have never lived in Lemmon, but always wanted to. That is where my dad grew up. I remember when I was a little guy we used to go there to visit my grandma. She lived next to cliffs gas station. I had a few uncles there at the time also. We lived in Rapid City and would travel to Lemmon quit often. I hated the ride but loved being there in Lemmon. I moved from Rapid City to Seattle then to a small coastal town in Rhode Island. I would love to take my family there and show them where it all started. Maybe someday when I hang up my hat I can move to Lemmon kick my feet up and take it easy.
