I'd look real hard at the Black Hills. Deer, Elk, Mountain Lions, Turkeys are West of Rapid City. Deer, Antelope, Sage Hens, pheasants and such are just East of town. Mountainous with nice lakes and streams to fish.

Rapid City is a fairly large town as towns in South Dakota go. Last I checked it was around 65,000 give or take. But that's been a while back.

Other towns in the hills, Hill City, Custer, Hot Springs, Deadwood/Lead, Spearfish. There's lots of other small towns that are mainly tourist spots and land or housing tends to be a little high when and if available. Easy to rent in the winter though. haha

Even East river (the river almost divides the state right down the middle. But even East River the hunting and fishing is excellent. But it's a tad bit flat.

The Black Hills does tend to be a lot milder in the winter then it is East River

If I was you, I'd take a couple weeks and go explore the hills a little bit. I think you'll really like them.

Taxes tend to be on the high side but not unbareable. My folks lived about 18 miles straight West of Rapid City. They had a $150,000 house on 10 acres and their taxes run about $3500 a year. They were off the highway about a half mile and had a beautiful stream running right through the middle of their property. About 3 ft deep and 25 ft across. And full of trout. My dad used to catch his limit of trout (pan size 12-14 inches long) before breakfast. He always said, "Son, you can't eat enough fish." Guess he was right, he passed when he was 92.

Rapid City or the Black Hills for deer and other large game. Winner and Pierre for pheasant.

The northeast corner (Aberdeen area) is great for deer hunting and is really fantastic for pheasant hunting. We have people who come from states very far away (California, Washington, Arizona, and even the Carolinas) to go pheasant hunting in the Northeast corner every year. There is fishing in the smaller rivers in the area...but the best SD fishing would probably be on the Missouri River.
