Jammie,

So, if I understand you correctly.
You are saying south west near Hot Springs.
So, If I may ask you another question.
Do you have any suggestions to a nice small town near there.

Thanks,

Tony

Sure, Hot Springs is a nice town. Actually, there are several towns out in the Hills that would be nice to live in. There are a lot of little towns right around Rapid City. The area right around Rapid has very decent winters. A lot of their days warm up to above freezing. They also have a very low pain index. Their summer days do have some high temps, but lack humidity so it's actually very comfy. Their summer nights cool down a lot so they have beautiful mornings. Hot Springs has about the same type of weather, maybe even a bit warmer then Rapid in the winter.

The Lead/Deadwood area is also very nice, but the thing I'd be concerned with there is the way the snow fills up the canyon. If you remember from old westerns, Deadwood was originally called "Deadwood Gulch".

There's also Custer and Hill City that are very nice. Spearfish is also a nice town.

My fave town in the Hills has got to be Keystone. It sits at the bottom of the mountain that you descend when you live Mt. Rushmore. It has the cutest shops. But I believe it pretty much closes down in the wintertime.

I'm not sure if you've seen this part of City Data, but here is something you may be interested in. If you keep scrolling down, it will show you all the towns in the area. Each new town you click on will show you more towns and you may eventually find the one you're looking for. Let us know what you find and if you have any questions about it, we're more then happy to help you.

I have a friend who lives in Canton and I can tell you it is not crowded. There is about 3000 people there total and SO MANY cornfields you can imagine. Pretty much people who live there know everyone and have lived there all their lives. I find people there to me much more courteous and more sociable than Sioux Falls believe it or not. If you go to:

<CANTON SOUTH DAKOTA**** A Southeastern South Dakota Community and take a look may help you to get more of an idea of what kind of a community it is.

My husband and I moved to Canton from Sioux Falls. We wanted a nice place to raise our new baby and more affordable housing so that I would be able to be a stay at home mom. We LOVE it here. My husband commutes to work in Sioux Falls (about 25-30 min drive). This town is large enough to have everything you need (grocery store, restaurants, school, pool, plenty of well-maintained playgrounds, and fun seasonal activities). The people here are very friendly. It is also a place where we feel very safe. There are plenty of young children in the city as well. You should have no problem finding playmates for your children.
hope that helps.

I know you posted this a while ago, but I just saw it and figured I would reply anyway...

I moved to Canton a few weeks ago, so I only have first impressions to offer. It is a fairly large town, with many businesses, but maintains (in my opinion) a good small-town feel. I think it will gain popularity in the next decade (raising real estate values), but it couldn't grow up too much, house-wise, in the town. I have essentially five neighbors, and they have all been really nice -- in a stereotypic '50s friendly neighborhood way. My next door neighbor has brought me cake, mowed my lawn, and loaded me up with veggies from her garden. The other neighbors haven't gone so far, but they were eager to say hello and offer other help.

Unfortunately, I cannot say about your businesses, being new to the town. I don't think it could be a bad place, though. It is also located near several other towns that would most likely give you a large clientel -- Tea, Harrisburg, Lennox. The east side of Sioux Falls is 25 minutes away (west is probably more like 30-35).

I think this is a neat, friendly town. If you research crime rates, they are incredibly low. Also, with such friendly neigbors, I feel that I am being protected all the time by watching, caring eyes. My husband and I are in the habit of leaving our cars unlocked here, and the garage open all day.

Good luck figuring out your move!

Many people go to Canton from Lennox to get the vehicles registered or renewed. Also, Canton and Lennox are rivals in high school sports and it has been that way for years. The Black and Blue bowl is held each year (and it is a tradition) between Lennox and Canton in football. Lennox is the black and orange (Orioles) and Canton is the blue and yellow (C-Hawks).

People from Tea, Lennox, and Harrisburg may occasionally go to Canton but oftentimes go to Sioux Falls for additional services. Sioux Falls is about the same distance or closer for them (in many cases) and is more worthwhile for these people. Many of the same people work in Sioux Falls.

Part that I like about Canton would be the older homes and downtown buildings. It adds character and charm. Most people are friendly in Canton.

I would venture that Canton will pick up in its growth as Harrisburg and Tea become more suburbanized and some people would desire a small town atmosphere. Canton is in with the likes of Lennox, Worthing, Hartford, Baltic, Garretson, Dell Rapids, Humboldt, Crooks, and Larchwood, IA which are second tier of communities that are currently holding their own well and even growing at a slower but healthy rate. The first ring of cities would be Harrisburg, Tea, and Brandon, which are growing in sheer numbers and at a high rate. The second tier cities may pick up in growth as Sioux Falls along with Brandon, Tea, and Harrisburg are larger (and are fused into essentially communities that have touching boundaries).

My apologies in advance for what will be a long post, and my humblest appreciation for those who can bear the details. Y'all have been most helpful with the weather info around the state and life in Canton! I'm thrilled I checked backed (since last Spring) to find new residents of Canton have posted, as quality of life is my prime concern due to my serious health condition and a teenager I've yet to rear.

I hope to be in Canton sometime Feb-Mar '09. I've been looking at 308 N Broadway, an Italianate style home featuring 2' thick stone walls. It will hopefully provide the soundproofing I need for my health, but my real hope is that I won't need the soundproofing! Any problem with frequent lawn mowing & blowing, cars cruising with bass booming? I've seen pics of "downtown" Canton and it is similar to the small town square to which I'm accustomed. (I'm from La Coste, TX, and have lived in The Woodlands, TX since 1991, up from Houston in 1984.) I haven't seen a grocery store, however, and it would be most helpful to know if it is small and if I can park in front of it. Walking more than 10' is frequently a struggle, and most days my limit is a 100' or less, total, making it impossible to get groceries and then cook.

We live in a very affluent area, with values and parenting principles that are inconsistent with my own. I swore I was not going to rear another teen here (our son is now 23), and now our daughter is 15, in H.S., and lost in "me" and "give me" and the latest this year "stop controlling me" syndrome reflective of the lifestyle here. A few years ago I had bought a small home in a small town (pop. 5000) near my mother in OK and everything was absolutely perfect! Until one man started cruising up and down the streets 2mph at all hours of the day and night with bass blasting. Vibrations could be felt more than 8 blocks away, before you could hear it! This would last 15-30 minutes at a time, sometimes every hour. Extreme, with extreme results: hospitalizations. So, very regrettably had to move back here and keep looking for the perfect home.

Any help, advice, pictures, comments, questions are most welcome. I can't afford to make a mistake. I hate to leave Texas and our one season as G-d intended, but with my asthma (I'm a walking 911) I can't tolerate temps over 70 anymore and humidity in particular. Used to be I chopped off a hand off if the A/C went under 80. Just trying to breathe is a marathon effort so I run so hot much of the time. This past year I've had an A/C unit in my bedroom to keep it around 55 all year which was a great solution to freezing out everyone else, and it reduced the humidity (like sucking in water) in my room providing a more comfortable environment so I was more stable.

Thanks in advance for you help and for your earlier contributions. Again, apologies for the length.

Canton does have a Grocery Store....if you follow the link above, and go to the business/Chamber of Commerce, there is a listing, for a Sunshine Grocery Store...they provide a phone number, you could call and ask about delivery, also.

Thanks! I had been there before, and of course I expect Canton would have a grocery, but didn't see any pics of one. I went back, and found the same stuff as before, but then then find the list that gave business phone numbers. I talk to Stef at Sunshine Foods and found it offers exactly what I need!

Furthermore, they provide home delivery to shut-ins every Tuesday!! She also told me that both pharmacies offer home delivery, also! It just keep gettin' better....

Ttech, welcome. Canton is a nice town, but I see the areas you've lived in and am just glad to hear that you've been up here so you know what to expect. Wow, and I've love to live in the Woodlands, but alas, it's pretty spendy for me.
