I'm not sure what the real estate market is doing in the Hills, but it's doing quite well in the eastern part of the state. Sioux Falls just reported a 5% increase in real estate sales. I'm just afraid that with the new science lab coming in, houses will really skyrocket out in the Hills.

What science lab? This is new to me. Considering a move to rapid or sioux falls area.

Snowy, that sounds wonderful!! Come on down!
The Hills area seems like it will once again be booming soon. Ellsworth added 750 new jobs this month. AND we got the Science Lab! Gov. Rounds announced it a couple of weeks ago. We had been in the running and it's unbelievable that they secured it for us.
It's going to be by the old Homestake Mine. They will be employing MANY people in the near future. Of course, a lot of them will be scientists, but the areas will boom because they don't have nearly enough housing or stores for all the people who will be moving there. I wish I had a newspaper article for you, but it's been a few weeks so I don't have one and I don't remember a lot of the particulars about it except that it is a very big deal and will add so much to the economy.

Wow, you're right. There isn't much for sale in Custer and the houses I found are larger and pretty expensive. I did a search on apartments and two is all that came up. Have you checked these out?

Interesting...
We are considering a move to SW South Dakota. I have experience in the science industry. Do you happen to know precisely which town this new science lab would be located in or at least the name of the company? Thanks!

As far as I know, it's going to be an underground lab at the old Homestake gold mine. Homestake is considered to be in Lead, but if you are going to search for housing or other things, Deadwood is right there, too.
Sorry, but I don't know the name of the company who will be running it. I haven't seen any recent newspaper articles about it.

It is being run by the National Science Foundation. The mine is between the cities of Deadwood and Lead, though many people commute from nearby Spearfish. SDSM&T from Rapid City is also doing research up there.

Hi Sue!
Congratulations on your pending move. My beloved and I may be a year behind you. We're life-long New Jerseyans, hoping to escape by September 2009.
For your rental need, you could try getting the names of some real estate agents from realtor.com. Many agents also work with rentals.
Please keep us posted on your progress.

We have friends who had also lived their entire lives in NJ. They came out here in Aug., 2006. We had a great time in the Hills and they just loved it there. They also liked it over here, especially the Enchanted Doll Museum and Cabelas.

We are also planning on moving to the Custer area this summer as well. We moved up to the Northern hills last summer, and it just hasn't been working out so well for us, so we thought that we would try the Southern hills, and I've been looking for rentals and real estate for a little while there are not a whole lot of things for sale as far as houses, but there is alot of lots for sale in that area, if you would like to build!!
The sciece lab is in Lead, and I believe that for info on the lab you can maybe get that though SDSM&T

Dee, welcome to the forum!! Danny will be happy to know that the West River members are coming close to outnumbering the East River members. He's been lonely for so long.

Hey Deedar, Would you mind expanding on the problems you've had in the Northern Hills? Where did you move from?
