Default Rape Statistics in Sioux Falls

I was comparing the crime rate of my city Arlington, Texas to Sioux Falls. In 2005, my state has 365,000 people living in it and had 178 rapes but there were 145 rapes in sioux falls with a population of 137,000 people. Based on population, Sioux Falls has a high number of rapes. Why?

You really can't compare the two. Sioux Falls is a town, all by itself. When you hit the edge of town, your in the country and there is nothing.

Where as Arlington is just houses in the middle of Dallas, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, etc. Could the people from Arlington be taking their troubles next door? You can't even tell where Arlington ends and Grand Prairie begins. I would think that crime in a metroplex needs to be looked at in the total town, not just one burb. But that's just my opinion.

I dunno. Maybe more people in Sx. Falls report the rapes then they do where you live.

I just checked the profile of your city (looks like a pretty town, by the way) and your most recent crime rate is 467.6.

The most recent crime index for Sx. Falls is 290.8 so it kind of puzzles me, too.

I think Jammie is right, people in Sioux Falls and Rapid City REPORT most rapes. Many other places do not. In fact Rapid city is known as the "rape capital of the midwest" or "rape-a-city"...

You would have to really, really work at it to get raped in SooFoo, in my humble opinon. Just not the place. People are very decent. Lots of culture. Keep your shoes on.

I agree with the above post. I lived 5 miles from sioux falls for 10 years and never even heard about a rape case.

Those rape stats have been hashed over before on this forum. I believe the last time we went thru it, it was determined that Health & Sicial Services in S D has a somewhat different definition of what a reportable rape is than other states have or they are more diligent about making a police report.

Good point~we do have several statutory rape cases in the state. Some of them are a farce like the boy is 18 and the girl is 16. But my point is~maybe all states don't include that type of "rape" in their stats. Some may go strictly with violent rape. Is that a possibility?

That is my understanding, but there is more to it than just statutory rapes. Apparently child abuse and incest are reported differently also. Hopefully an expert on the subject can explain it more thoroughly.

I was just on a web site and it showed Sioux Falls as having 42 rapes per 100,000. I tried going back and was going to copy it and paste it here, and now I can't fine it. haha I was too busy looking for the "Facts" question.
