Default Greedy Motel Rate$$$$$ In Black Hills!!!

I am still rocking and reeling from the greedy motel rate$$$$ in the Black Hills. So FEH on them, I say. FEH GLINKASCHLEPSKI, as we say in the old country.

We will CAMP next year in the Black Hills for a pittance. After we buy the sticker, it's like TEN DOLLARS a night!

It's always been high in the Black Hills, but it seems that the last few years they've gotten really greedy.

My Aunt worked at the HI in Keystone and they were over $100 a night, during the off season. Problem is, they stayed pretty booked up. You'd think enough people would say, "How much? I'll go elsewhere."

You're both right. The cost for motel rooms in the Hills is high, but as I said before, you can check out cabins. Last year we went out with some friends from NJ and they had originally wanted to stay in a cabin. Some were expensive and nice. But there were others that cost 35 per night. They had no heat, but they had beds and showers and electricity. You have to bring your own sheets, blankets, towels, etc., but since you would actually spend little time in your room, it's still a good deal.

This may not be a good comparison, but you know how expensive motels can be in some areas. I realize the Hills area isn't a sub-tropical beach in Florida, but there you're lucky to get a motel for 150 a night. Many run well over 200-300. AND the Hills area is absolutely beautiful and is definitely a tourist destination.

$35? You tell ME exactly WHERE! Cabins all list for the same price as a motel room. I KNOW because I called around on your "advice."

So you tell me EXACTLY where!

The only REAL DEAL is to camp. $10 a night after you buy your SoDak sticker.

Default Where are you looking?

I agree that the Black Hills have gotten greedy - especially the last few years. My family and I have gone to Kool Deadwood Nights for years along with many local WY friends. This year, many are having to stay in Newcastle, WY because local motels have doubled their rates - and it used to be a family thing.

Not sure where you are looking, but we stay outside Lead, SD at a little resort called Whitetail Court. They have both traditional motel rooms and cabins for larger parties. We pay $65/night for 2Q in a small room. Cabins are around $80, but that can be for like 8-10 people. No swimming pool, but they do have a hot tub and brook running behind the place. And very nice people who treat non-locals respectfully!!

The reason hotel rates are SO HIGH in the Black Hills during the summer is because the area has nothing to live off of for the rest of the year...

I have actually talked to Bikers who say that the Sturgis Rally is the cheapest one to go to. Rooms are WAY cheaper here than anywhere else... especialy Daytona!

The drawback is... many people MUST travel to the Black Hills during this period (funerals, weddings, etc.) and they also have to pay the HIGH rates.

Rapid City thinks its New York!

Jim, I can't tell you exactly where. My friend had found several websites of cabins in the Hills and I do remember that some were 35 a night. I no longer have that website available, but it's still got to be out there. But as I said, that did not include blankets, sheets, towels, soaps, etc. It had neither heat nor AC in it either. Needless to say, we opted for a nice motel.

Wyolady, we went out to Deadwood for that last year and just loved it. We spoke with a lot of people from Wyo. so we may have met.
