El Paso has always seemed like a totally different world from here. But it's kind of funny~a few months ago there was a gap for moderating a few forums and El Paso was one of them. I volunteered to take it for a couple weeks until they could find someone permanently. I didn't figure that I could identify with the residents there or that they'd be accepting of me. What a shock I had. They are just the nicest bunch of people and I go back there and read when I get a chance. I also post on occasion.
It is obvious that it's very different from here, but Mich will be able to have friends when they move down there so the transition will be a bit easier.
Kinda off topic and I realize that , but what cities did you like the most, Mark? Were you ever in the Temple/Killeen/Waco areas? Which of the four larger cities~Austin, Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio did you prefer?

There's been a huge crime wave in Sioux Falls lately: a couple of candy bars stolen from 7-11 and a 4-year-old did a hit-and-run with his Big Wheel into a guy's shin. It's getting out of hand.

Agree wholeheartedly in wherever someone goes they will make the best of it, make friends, and find a reason to enjoy where they are at that time. My many travels have taught me that for sure !!!
I was a platoon sergeant at Fort Hood for 4 years and spent a lot of time in the Temple/Killeen/Waco area. I liked it there because it was central to the larger cities in Texas. San Antonio was 3 hours, Austin 2, and Dallas was about 4. Heck Houston wasnt much further than that either. I'm biased because I lived in San Antonio for so long, but I absolutely LOVE that city and the River Walk area always has something going on. The food will spoil you from eating Mexican for the rest of your life.
Outside of that, I also loved Austin (The capital is really nice) and Houston. We always use to go to Houston for a weekend here and there to watch the Astros or Texans whenever my hometeam came to town. Houston use to be a dump, but they put a ton of money into that city and I just really enjoyed being there.
A small town favorite of mine if you are ever in the San Antonio area that is about an hour east is a little oil town called Luling. They have quite possibly the best BBQ and sausage I've ever had at a place called The City Market. The town smells of oil horribly, but it's got that whole golly gee Beaver thing going on that I love about small towns. Oh yeah, they also have their yearly, "Watermelon Thump" where you can get just about every watermelon known to mankind !!!
Fun times !!!

Mark, thank you for the evaluation. We have some friends who were down at Houston for a wedding and just loved it there. They'd actually like to move there. It's just surprising cause they've always lived here~population 17,000. I like tropical and always wanted to visit Galveston. We nearly went there last March and now we wish we would've gone then. It'll never be the same although I understand a lot of the historical area fared well.
Drover, I like your sense of humor.
Deadwood, that's an interesting link. I didn't get a chance to go through all the states yet. I wonder how they picked the certain cities in each state. I have no argument that Sx. Falls is a good area and it's safe, too. But that pretty much describes most of the cities here. Guess maybe cause it's the largest city and would be more appealing to relocators who are used to more populated areas?

criteria for selection
The business week article only looked at towns of 50k and up and with median incomes between 40k and 100k.
I know this is a shocker but Sioux Falls was 1st and Rapid City was the runner up. Third place ....ah well... Sturgis during bike week?

S.Dakota is one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. I have lived in the mtns. of North Ga., Long Island, Oklahoma & Florida. How anyone can talk about crime here is so rediculous. How many gangs or just thugs are here compared to anywhere else? The only place I've been in the states that I can honestly say is prettier is Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Mass. (you know, the island they filmed Jaws on)? If you're leaving to plant things, good luck. If you're just bored & leaving seeya.

Well, now I KNOW that I'll stay as far away as I can from Sioux Falls!
