Out of, it appears that you've already done most of your internet research. Have you checked out Sperlings Best Places? They have a site where you can compare two cities for so many things. I just went there and compared Dallas and Sx. Falls. The median rate in the U.S. for crime is a 3 for both violent crimes and property crimes. Sx. Falls rates a 5 for both and Dallas rates a 7, which is the highest for both. Neither cities would be considered "good", but Sx. Falls does have a lower crime rate.

haven't check that site yet, most of my info either comes from this site or from all the forbes.com list and it seems that sioux falls is at the top of every good list and the bottom of every bad list and just the oposite for Dallas, the top of every bad list and the bottom of every good list.

wantoutofdallas: You have a son?

Trust me on this - Log off your computer, pack your stuff, and start moving up here.

Taking everything out of the equation, except your son...... you won't regret it.

Might want to do it soon to. I hear Sioux Falls is growing quickly... but there have been no reports of growth problems. I noticed that 41st street seemed a bit busier the last time I was there, but thats about it.

The growth may reflect on property value soon, so if you have some cash saved up, a house to sell, or anything at all... right now would be the time to get in.

Hope that helps.... and 'Welcome'.

That was good advice, Stitch. You may have mentioned it, but what town do you live in now? I think you mentioned growing up in Huron?

We lived in Sioux Falls for a couple years and LOVED it there. It is the biggest small town you will ever live in. The people are very friendly, housing is pretty affordable although it will probably seem expensive coming from Texas. There is no state income tax but the property taxes are high so that tends to even things out some.

The public schools are ok, not great. The Catholic School system in town is outstanding, they have a large Catholic high school as well.

When we moved there we got involved in a Newcomer's Club that was very active and met a lot of great people that way. When we lived there they had a listing in the phonebook. It is worth tracking down this club to meet new people.

I would move back to Sioux Falls any time (we live in the Minneapolis, MN area now). As far as the winters go, one of the winters we were there we had 60's through most of January. Not normal but the weather in Sioux Falls tends to be more mild then you would think.

Golfgal, I always whine about our cold winters, but it really is colder in some areas then it is here. Northern Minn. and northern Mont. get VERY cold.

Just writing to say I like your name.
My wife and I differ on opinion, however, if I had my way I would name myself:

Was in Dallas the other month. I can see why you named your moniker as such

Good Luck

Smile my opinion

Hi everyone, just want to say thanks for all the info, it really is amazing that no one can come up with anything really bad to say. If take notice of the other states (and I know you have) and it really doesn’t matter which one, just about all of them have someone looking to move to them and in all the responses you will fine someone stating negative things, and granted you can make the best situation seem bad if you just don’t like where you are. So here is my perspective on things.

When I wake up in the morning after sleeping next to my lovely wife I’m in a good mood, when I wake up my beautiful son and get him ready for school I am still in a good mood, when I leave for work and it takes me 45 minutes to go 12 miles, I get perturbed,
When I stop at the convenient store for a muffin and the person behind the counter speaks no English my mood gets a little worse, when I go to lunch and I have to point at the # I
Want because they do not understand English I get a little more frustrated, when I stop at wal-mart on the way home and have to ask where something is and the response is
“No obla English” well now I’m just in a bad mood.

So let me say this I can’t stop the traffic, I can’t make people learn English, I can’t lower the crime rate, I can’t make it rain and refill the lakes that are 10 feet below normal.
But as for the cold, well being from Florida and Texas I’m not familiar with this term, but I have heard of stores that sell these things called coats and gloves. So being warm, that I have control over and if that’s the biggest issue I can find with SD than it doesn’t sound like a bad place to raise a family

Now granted I am no expert on SD, having never lived there but comparing all the statistics and the responses, it seems like a logical choice. But that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong…

Smile It really is that great

iwantoutoftexas - You're not wrong about SD. I really is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I grew up there and have a sister who lives in Sioux Falls. She and her family love it for the low crime rate, friendly people, good cost of living, good schools and the variety parks, trails and rec activities. My parents are getting ready to retire and they are moving to Sioux Falls. I have another sister who lives mid-state, near the Missouri, and she and her husband wouldn't think of raising their kids anywhere else. Our family would move there too if my husband could get a job in his field there. Believe all you've read and call the movers.

I have family that live in Sioux Falls and there aren't really any negatives. The cold winters are horid and it does get severe thunderstorms in the summer/fall but besides that everything is pretty good. There is virtually NO traffic, the schools are good (especially Catholic schools like O'Gorman which a few of my cousins' go to), and the summers are mild.

The only downside is that since you're used to Dallas, the lack of resturants and activities (concerts, shows, etc). I prefer the big cities but Sioux Falls is great for someone who wants that small-town atmosphere.
