Default Information on Custer SD and Star acedemy

Hi, I was actually looking for information on relocation to Custer SD. I have been wanting to move for quit some time and see that The Star Acedemy in Custer is always looking for youth counselors and thought about applying. I am however a little worried...I know no one in that area and have personally only been there once. If anyone could give me any feedback on the area and also Star academy...that would be great. I see alot of positive feedback for other members. Thought this would be a great place to start. Tank You

tkolb,

Let me ask you, on your one visit, how were you received?

Although, I've never lived in Custer, I have lived a few miles from there on a ranch. I found the people to be very warm and friendly. You say you know no one? I'll give you 10 minutes and there will be somebody walk over and welcome you to the neighborhood. You will meet people quickly there. Some will be curious why you invaded South Dakota, haha, some will just want to meet you.

As far as Star Acadamy, sorry, I know nothing about it.

Star use to be Custer Youth Corrections Center ( changed around 2003) but it is still run by the department of corrections. They have boys and girls programs / on-site education, etc... pretty standard youth treatment stuff if you have worked in the field. I don't know anyone who works there so can't give you the inside scoop though! The hills are a great place to live though... we moved here knowing no-one as well and we are enjoying it!

Thank You for the response. I loved it there, the people seemed great and the scenery was awesome. Still very limbo about the idea...I am not the type of person to just up and move by myself...but really need a change in everything. I hope to get up the courage and just go for it. How is the cost of living and everything. I have heard both sides either good or extremely high.

From a cost of living chart with the U.S. average being 100, Luverne rates an 86 and Custer rates a 90. The cost of living in the Hills area is higher then the rest of the state except I believe that Sx. Falls is right up in that area, too.
