Yeah, it's a pretty poor example of a "memorial" isn't it. I used to love to shoot black and white with landscapes and buffalo. I'd get the shots developed in a sepia tone and you'd swear they were from the 1850's. These were actually from the old 35mm negatives that I had put onto a CD at a photo lab. I actually sold some of the big buffalo bull and the mom/baby in a southwestern art gallery in Naples Florida some years back. German tourists love American Indian culture and decor.
Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you liked them!

On a studies trip in high school I asked our Native American tour guide why Wounded Knee was so... crappy. He said that the tribe has been offered money countless times to spruce it up and make it a tourist destination, but they have refused all donations. Wounded Knee is supposed to be a place of sorrow and humility. The Sioux are a humble people.

Agreed, it should be a place of humility and reverence. Sorrow, that too, but to me sorrow is all about pain, guilt, or regret. No amount of that can undo what happened, so I don't know if that should be the main focus of the emotion. While I wouldn't suggest a large polished granite structure, with a Carrabba's next door to feed the tourists, I do think those fallen souls deserve a cleaned up, better appearing area to honor their memory and better portray the true loss. I think leaving the area in a shambles makes it look like it doesn't matter. Then again, most nomadic plains tribes are funny about permanent monuments to anything. "nothing carved in stone" is an old saying...
Thanks for the compliment Jammie!

Sand Creek, 3/4 mile north of Forestburg,[about 2 miles before Sand Creek empties into the James River. Sand Creek starts @ Rose Hill, by Wolsey, SD. Water volume very low, this spring, for this creek.

I may have decieved you, somewhat. while water volume is low, it's only slightly below normal, for this creek. I scanned a pic I took spring 97. the camera location makes it not even look like the same place.

More pics of Badlands SD
Went to the Badlands this past weekend, the cloudy pictures are from Saturday (there was somewhat of a snowstorm overnight), unfortunately my digital camera was dead so these are low-quality cell phone pictures.
