Wessington Springs
Hello,
I have come across this seemingly lovely hamlet in SD and wonder if anyone has been there.
What is it like in Wessington Springs? Would the "big city" be Mitchell?
I see they have some arts there. That is good.
THanks very much!

Possibly not.
Using the links from the same website that Jammie provided for a previous post and that same old road map I found Wessington a few miles west of Huron in Beadle county. Wessington has a population of 248 people so you will probably have to drive to Huron for many of your basic services such as health care, shopping, jobs, etc. Mitchell, which is about 55 miles to the south might also be an option, but it could be a challenging drive in the winter. Beadle County looks like a solid middle class county that depends primarily on agriculture for income. Couldn't find anything about an artsy component of the population, but someone else may be able to comment on that.

Wessington and Wessington Springs are two different towns in different counties.
Wessington Springs is in Jerauld county.
The arts thing i saw on a website a while back but i'm not sure how economically healthy the town is.

Yea, those two are confusing. Actually, they're very close together~maybe a half hour apart. They're both small and cute, but it wouldn't be my choice since I still have to work and neither one would offer much for employment. I've been through both and they're both nice, but quite small. It doesn't seem like there's too much in either town. They'd be perfect for a healthy retired couple though.

Wessington Springs
County seat of Jerauld County. The big towns nearby are Mitchell and Huron. Good primary care/essential care hospital. Still a fair mix of business on Main Street - nice grocery store, cafes, law office, doctor's office, realtors, title company, investment broker, at least one bank, couple oil companies, etc. Nice mix of churches. The school is OK as far as I know. Has a replica of Anne Hathaway's cottage and for sometime had a Shakespeare festival of some sort. Not certain about the continuation of that activity. I seem to recall an Opera House/Theater on Main Street as well - maybe there are some community players? Don't remember for sure. Interestingly, there's a fellow in/near Springs who builds pipe organs and has a good reputation for his instruments. See, Cooperative Partners Online - Article or Salmen Organs - Welcome!!
It's a good looking community situated on east side of a nice rise. Good luck!

Wow. That is great to know...I thought I read that it was a bit artsy and it seems it is. I will look into the pipe organ builder and see if i can get more info.
Thank you!

I live in Wessington Springs all of my life. It is a wonderful community that has lots to offer for a smaller town. The local high school has a play or musical in the spring in the opera house. The school is one of the most technogically advanced in the state. Lane, another small town, is located nearby. Lane is full of historical facts that helped build our state. Wessington Springs also has a ton of history behind it.
