Lemmon, South Dakota
My husband and I are looking for a nice small town to relocate to within the next year or so. We noticed that the home prices are quite reasonable in South Dakota.
We are from the south west. Can you please share as much information as possible with us? What is Lemmon Like? What is the weather like through out the year? Are there tornados and such?
Any information and pics at all would be helpful. We are just tired of killing ourselves trying to make ends meet. Having a lower mortgage payment or none at all sounds real nice. It would sure lighten our load so we can concentrate on more important things like family.
Please share any info you can. I do realize there must be "cons" in a place with such affordable housing..What are they? What are the pro's? We have young children and 2 little dogs too.

Hi and glad to see you're interested in So. Dak. If you follow the link above, it will give you a bit of info about Lemmon. I'm not really familiar with it so there's no first hand info I can give you. If you check out the link, it will bring you right back to this forum after you scroll down. One of the "Lemmon" threads has 45 posts on it so that may be helpful.
Real estate is much cheaper in most of the state and actually, the entire state compared to a lot of places. We don't have a state income tax and even though our real estate tax is normally around 21, depending on your county~you'll still find taxes quite reasonable since the evaluation isn't very high on our homes. Sometimes it feels like our crime rate is growing, but when you look at the charts from other areas of the country, our rate is meager compared to a lot of places. There are parts of the state that have a very healthy economy and you can find jobs in most sectors. Employers normally treat you with dignity and even though our wages are low, you get generally get benies from DAY ONE, which I've discovered is quite rare in this country anymore.
IMHO~The Downfalls~ COLD temps in the winter~COLD windchills in the winter~SNOW. But keep in mind, I'm the whiner here about our winters. Some people like it. We do get hot summers, too. East River has humidity, but West River, where you're interested, has practically no humidity and a very low dewpoint. Here's another link that deals more specifically with weather then the first one does~ Average Weather for Lemmon, SD - Temperature and Precipitation
Keep in mind that the temps don't include windchills.
After you've checked those two things out and you have any questions, we'll be happy to try to answer them for you.

The old joke is, "We don't have no thermometers, we just turn old blue out and wait three minutes. If you have to bust him loose from the tree, it's cold."
Years ago I was stationed in San Diego in the Navy. We went back to visit in South Dakota. We had a little tea cup poodle. I put her in my jacket and took her out and set her down. She just tipped over with her little legs sticking straight out. I picked her back up and took her in to warm up. When she was warm, I took her out again but this time, when I took her out of my coat, she was in the sqaut position and she finished her business. Course had to pick her up again and take her inside. It was -43. No wind chill. Just bone cold -43. But that's not the norm. So don't let it detere you.

And don't forget the Petrified Wood Museum there in Lemmon. We live in buffalo which isn't too far away from lemmon, about an hour or hour and a half or so. Not much there really. Its a bigger town though and has more than buffalo LOL. Grocery store, Gas Stations, and Hospital if I remember correctly.
