My neighbor is a pilot and has been flying for the forest service (wild land fires) for a number of years. Right now he's training on a new aircraft. Not sure what kind.

The grassland fire danger index will reach the extreme category
this afternoon. Extreme weather conditions or a very low
moisture content of grasses...and other dry organic material
on the ground...indicate that critical burning conditions exist.
A fire will start easily and has the potential to become large

characteristics. No outdoor burning should take place.

conditions will persist through early this evening. An isolated
thunderstorm or two is possible across northeastern wy late this
afternoon or early evening and could produce dry lightning.

On monday...gusty southwesterly winds will develop ahead of an
approaching cold front. Temperatures will be lower...but a very
dry airmass in place will drop relative humidities to around 15
percent across much of western and south central south dakota in
the afternoon. Critical fire weather conditions are expected to
develop over these areas in the afternoon and persist until around
sunset. A cold front will finally move through the area monday
