Turkey hunting in South Dakota....
Hello everyone,
I am going to be doing a turkey hunting trip in Wyoming in april of 2012..
Apparently I am going to be very close to South Dakota as I will be hunting in Crook County,WY...
I was just wondering if there is anyone out there that could point me in the right direction just in case I get a turkey in WY and wanted to hunt SD...
Im going to be in WY for 6 days so If I get a bird early I would like to hunt SD....Any thoughts...
Thanks Perry in Ontario

I am not sure what sort of thought you are looking for, but wild turkeys are abundant in Fall River county around Hot Springs and Edgemont. I believe the same is true of Custer county and others. The Black Hills National forest should have public hunting available in either county. I would start with the forest service for further info.

Also wondering is there much national forest in that area of SD..
I am going to be in Wyoming in Crook County this spring and was wondering how far I am away from the national forest in SD in the Black Hills..

sturgis is right there pressed up against the black hills... I'm pretty sure most of the black hills are considered state or national parkland. There's also a forested area to the east of sturgis.. ft meade recreation area. trees all around.

There is Moskee Road just outside of Sundance Wyo. that will take you up into the National Forest areas.
The Centennial Trail system which is over 100 miles long (no motor vehicles) and starts near Sturgis on BLM land heads thru the Black Hills. I believe approx. 85% of the Black Hills is National Forest or BLM and as stockwiz said Sturgis lies up against the edge of it.
I grew up in Sturgis and ventured straight from town into National Forest or BLM regularly via my feet or mountain bike.

Crook County is in the Black Hills and they run continuous right into Sturgis. From Sturgis you can go North, South, or West into National Forest. There is forest East of Sturgis, but I'm not sure it's National Forest.
The majority of the Black Hills is going to be to the South West of Sturgis. Lots of trails to hike, some trails are horse trails, some are 4 wheeler trails. Lots to do in the Black Hills.

The forested area east of Sturgis is Fort Meade Recreation Area, managed by BLM. The rest is Bear Butte State Park (not much forest there, but there are trees...).

Here is my situation....
I am hunting turkeys on private property in Wyoming(Crook County)I am there for 6 days...If I get a turkey the first or second morning I want to go to SD to see if I can get one in the black hills...
I would like to hunt the black hills...
Just wondering how far from crook county in Wyoming to the black hills of SD...
Im only allowed one turkey in Wyoming so I must be on the SD side in the national forest...
Thanks Perry
