this is for KAT1 well i can already see you need a reality check. where have you been the last 10-15 years.??? whitewood is a very nice community. there is no community or town that is going to be absolutely perfect. yes, whitewood elementary school only goes to 6th grade and then you have the option of sending your children to sturgis (7 miles away) or spearfish (14 or so miles away). whitewood is no longer, how you say "trailer trash community". as of now, we have at least 4 new sites in whitewood where they are building new h o m e s and townhomes for new people moving into whitewood. ooooops! there goes all you trailer trash, huh. bet you feel silly. you should probably do your research first!!! oh, and whitewood was one of many small communities to recieve grant money for improving the community to make it a better place to live and raise kids. and for your info. there are 3 bars, 2 grocery stores, 2 restaurants, post office, 3 churches, 2 daycares, beauty shop, altaire enterprises(computer place), 2 vehicle repair shops, 1 shop that builds motorcyles, 2 really nice parks ( 1 that will be getting all new playground equiptment this spring thanks to the caring people in the surrounding area), an art studio, very nice library, 2 assisted living facilities, 2 motels, another vehicle repair shop, a business that builds log homes, and various business outside of town. yes we are small but growing. we have our ups and downs like everyone else. i have lived here for over 30 years and the changes to whitewood now have been tremendous and they are already talking of more better changes to come.

Whitewood South Dakota
Everyone I have ever met from this town either has or has had a problem with crystal meth or alcohol. The kids talk of nothing but having partied out there and supposedly some of the teachers in the school (sturgis) are even crystal meth users themselves. One of whom got her own son addicted and can she help him now? No, since she is wrapped up in it herself. Does not seem like kind of town to raise family...maybe if you are on your own or looking for a party (even after the rally).

I would have to say that I have very fond memories of my time living in Whitewood. I lived there from the time I was 4 until I left for college. It is a very small, quiet town with few businesses and not much for entertainment, but is close to much activity. While I lived there I never once worried about crime or was afraid to walk around alone after dark. No stoplights, so not much traffic. The people are very friendly, which is typical of South Dakota in general. They will go out of their way to help someone in need.
The person who said Whitewood is dirty and full of trailer parks and sex offenders must not have personal experience in the town. They are sorely mistaken!
I will always say I am proud to have grown up in Whitewood and love going back home to visit. It is a great place for a kid to grow up. One thing that I didn't like was the smell that occasionally emanated from the livestock feed plant...someone once told me they thought it smelled like peanut butter... I don't think so. Looking back, I did, as all the other kids did, complain about there not being much to do, but now that I have kids of my own, I realize that's not always a bad thing. I'm living in So Cal now and wonder about raising my kids here.
Some of the cool things I remember are street dances in summer, shooting off fireworks at the ballpark, softball games, rollerskating at Hale Hall, the Hole in the Wall, Howdy's, my elementary school (see posted pic), riding bikes on the trails behind my house (at the time), sledding down the hill on Maple (?), going out in the woods to cut our own Christmas tree, watching the skaters on the ramp at Oak Park, I could go on and on...

Although I have been by Whitewood and am not too familiar with it, I have been to the Black Hills and think the people in the area like most places in South Dakota and the Upper Midwest are friendly, decent people. Anywhere you go, there is always a few bad apples. No place is perfect. I think that the posts criticizing Whitewood are letting the few bad apple be indicative of everyone else in town, which is unfair to the majority of people who are decent, hardworking, and friendly who live in Whitewood.
I think that Whitewood would have a good future with the Homestake Mine being turned into a lab, retires and out-of-staters chosing the Black Hills as their home, and additional economic expansion in the Black Hills region.
I am thinking about going up to the Hills in the near future and see it when there is not as many tourists around. I like visiting the Black Hills but do not like to visit in midsummer due to too many tourists being there already and the higher hotel and gas prices (traditionally).

I don't have a lot of experience with Whitewood. But even living in Sheridan Wyoming, when I want posts, I go to Whitewood. When I grew up in Rapid City, I went to Whitewood to get my posts. Always seemed like the "Go-To" place when it came to posts, post tops, fencing material.
Never experienced living there or even talked to the people that lived there other then the people I dealt with for posts. They seemed like good, down home folk.

Whitewood has small town charm which is what most people like about our small state. For more job opportunities most people commute to the bigger towns of Sturgis, Spearfish or Rapid City.
There are also small communities closer to Rapid City as well like nemo, johnson siding etc that give that small town feel.
