Moving the deadwood
Deadwood/Lead (pronounced 'leed' not 'led') gets a lot of snow in the winter. Hot, low humidity summers, wet springs, cold, low humidity winters and beautiful falls.
You'll need a 4 wheel drive in the winter as most of the streets in Deadwood are very steep and narrow.
A lot of casino's. I'm not fond of Kevin Cosner and am not proud that he owns a casino in Deadwood. He's not a nice person.
However, if you like to gamble, Deadwood is perfect for you! It's about 20 minutes to Spearfish where they have a Corvette Rally every summer (Corvette Classic). It's about 30-45 minutes to Sturgis where they have the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August. I would recommend taking holiday and leaving the state during that week. Unless you own a motorcycle.

I have relatives in Lead and have just visited for 10 days. I absolutely love the area. I'd have to visit in the cold and snow before I make up my mind to relocate. Since I live in the deep south that would truly be a shock to my body and soul but at least there are no hurricanes in South Dakota. Just a suggestion based on my family's experiences, if I were to relocate I'd look around Custer. Bike week (isn't just a week) is pretty crazy and any drive is virtually impossible. There is so much beauty in the more rural areas and less Harley traffic, that Custer would be my choice. Maybe we'll be neighbors some day!
Good Luck!

Dixie, glad you liked it here and welcome to the forum. I hope you make the decision to move here, but I totally understand why you'd want to visit in the wintertime. I'll trade your canes for my snowstorms.
What area of Ala. do you live in?

I'd take a snowstorm over your hurricanes any day! Hurricanes you have to leave your house, snowstorms make you stay home!

I have never been to Deadwood or any of the surrounding areas, But it looks like a beautiful place. I am interested in finding out what the cost of living is really like out there. I live in the south and there is a very good chance I may be relocating in the near future. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Cost of living will be about the same or less depending on where at in the South you are relocating from. I have seen that some parts of the South, especially Houston, have some of the lowest COLs in the US. Other parts, like Atlanta, DC, and VA are much higher.

Hi Ms, like Danny said, the cost of living is quite reasonable. You can find the 2008 COL if you scroll down a bit on the site above. It's listed right about the forum topics. Deadwood appears to be 80 out of 100 so it's very reasonable.
Here would be an example of the COL for a southern city~
